Aside from doing it commercially or for some $ gigs! What does this hobby do for you?
Well Chris, I have to think about that. Primarily just for fun.

Pure enjoyment and creative outlet
I enjoy the combination of science and art. I enjoy viewing a scene, visualizing how a print of that scene will look, metering and possibly filtering the scene to enable the exposure to render a capture which will enable the visualized steps to produce my interpretation of the scene being photographed. This also applies paid work.
Additionally, going with a picture is worth a 1000 words, this illustration sums it up.

Sometimes I think it's because I'm masochistic. I aim for the best and most creative rendition of my subject, and often fall far short of my goal. I keep at it, though, and every now and then I'm rewarded with a keeper. As AA said, 12 good photos in a year is a pretty good crop.

Was a professional photographer for 40 years. I now do it for the same reason I got into it, it is a personal challenge to create the best image I can. I share on many websites. My goal is to be Non-political on these sites and just share my photo's with the idea of brightening someones day. If I do that I am very happy.

I find it relaxing and it lets me not worry about things now that it is a hobby. I use to shoot weddings. And that was very stressful.
It gives me something to focus on! B^)
I do it to record a record of my "year" of activities. When I get frustrated
about work and being so busy with life it's nice to go back
through the fun times.
I take photos for enjoyment of myself, and to share with others, that include friends and relatives. I sometimes have 4X6 prints made from important events, and give them away, so attendees can say later. "I was there." They appreciate that I'm just a hobbyist too. Having fun with them.
Storytelling.
I see things through the lens that inspire my words and I get tremendous personal joy from writing poetry and prose to accompany the images. Ultimately, photography and writing simply make me happy. Moreover, I truly love sharing these stories, hoping to make a difference in someone’s day.
Making a difference.
One thought.
One sigh.
One smile at a time.
That is why I do this.

It helps preserve memories.
It is a creative outlet.
It gets me out of the house.
Maybe he wanted Part 2 of this topic. Like movie sequels? The Godfather Part 2 was the best one. To me, at least.
