This Pacific 4-6-2 was built as a passenger locomotive. "She" ran severalr The train routes across the U.S. but spent most of her time in Texas. This engine was in service until 1952. This steam engine burned fuel oil, not coal.
Everyday around noon, a similar locomotive and railcars came through town. My Gramps would look at his pocket watch and tell me it was time to go. We drove the few blocks to the crossing and parked roadside. As the train approached, the engineer would blow the whistle and wave to us. I like to think he was as glad to see us. Thank you for letting me relive this special memory. I was about 5 at the time.
