Went from 2.17 to 2.39 yesterday in Newark metro area . Seen some stations as high as 2.49 . If our Governor didn't screw us with a gas tax , these prices would be 23 cents lower per gallon . Oh well , gotta drive .

I'll take that. I'm in NL, Canada for the summer. $1.25 per LITRE here and our dollar is worth about 70 cents U.S.
Perhaps Jack just to quote the price per LITRE would mean little to the boys/girls south of us. Would be better to explain it in their language, that's Dollars. Just came back myself from the "Rock" so I know what you mean about the prices. Not much better in my hometown as the price just went up to $1.16 a litre.
So fellows and ladies, here goes. ONE USA gallon contains 3.78 Litres. Thus for us to buy the equivalent amount in NL it would cost us $4.73 (that's for one US gallon folks) But our Canadian gallon contains 4.54 litres, so if we were still on the old method of gallons one of them would have cost us $5.68 CD. Now you can see why the big oil companies (and the government are happy we went metric) as $1.25 sounds a helluva lot better than $5.68 at the pumps.
The exchange rate this morn is $ 0.80 meaning it takes that much USD to buy One dollar Canadian. Thus, if you care to venture north to visit us, the equivalent amount of gas (one US gallon) would end up costing you $3.78 in your own dollars. So, conversely, for us to travel in the USA and purchase one US gallon with our Canadian dollar it will cost us $3.13 if the rate posted was $2.50 USD. I happen to live in a border city so youse don't have to guess where my gas purchases are made 😜. I would save roughly $1 or so for each US gallon I buy in Canadian funds as right now just down the street I would be paying out of my pocket $4.38 for the equivalent one US gallon.
I often wonder (not really) why a refinery shutting down in Texas makes the price of gasoline go up in Canada, whom have their own Oil that we refine ourselves. Couldn't mean the big oil companies are socking to us, could it 🤡😈. I think my math is right but I could be out a few cents here or there.
So it usually puts a smile on our Canadian faces to hear your complaints over you HIGH prices.😜😜😜😜

I am curious as to why gas prices are going up. I think it all has to do with Wall Street. The media here in Dallas created a frenzy when they talked about the refineries being down. People started topping their tanks off. That is what actually led to stations being out of gas. Now we've learned that there is plenty of gas, but suppliers are used to only so much demand each week. The "run" on gas after Harvey has caused shortages, but more (the usual amount) is on the way. That being the case, I don't understand why a gallon of gas should cost any more....except that gas companies are taking advantage of the demand.
It's called the "Stick it to 'em" process. It went from $2.19 to $2.49 here too.

When oil refineries stop refining because of a hurricane, you can expect gasoline prices to rise. Our local prices went from $2.25 to about $2.50 overnight.
Yeah, ours went up by 30 cents a gallon overnight too... Thing is, it went up the day before Harvey even made landfall! A lot of refineries have had to shut down, so we can expect a bump in prices over the next few weeks, but it is just profiteering to put it up before any 'shortage' even hits...
Same story at the beginning of the year, when our beloved governor put a 3% tax on *wholesale* fuel prices, starting 1/1/17. The very first morning, all the gas stations put up their prices... The fuel that was in their tanks had not been charged the extra tax, so why should the customers have to pay it? It amazes me that there is no kind of government oversight on the price of fuel... If turkey farmers all doubled their prices as we get close to Thanksgiving, people would be up in arms about it. Yet the oil companies do that all the time, and the people have no comeback. It always goes up around Thanksgiving - typically the busiest driving weekend of the year.
After Katrina, there were shortages because of refinery damages and what-not, which is reasonable enough. A year or so later, however, the prices started to rocket just as the summer vacation season started. The reason given was that some refineries had to be taken offline for routine maintenance! Surely, routine maintenance is a cost of doing business, and is presumably paid for in the normal run of things anyway?
Coming from the UK, where petrol is about 4 times the price it is here, maybe I shouldn't complain, but I still hate to feel I am being ripped off!

Oh really? There's this huge tank of gas sitting in the middle of the US with pipelines running to every nook and cranny of the country?
California is at $3.00/gallon

Not true! He is not an economist!
BTW, there is absolutely no doubt that the amount of the hike is contrived. We were warned weeks ago of the pending labor day increase. Also be aware that in some areas the gas composition will be transitioning to the winter gas blend that is cheaper to produce as well. Remember that big money drives this country and neither party will buck the oil companies and the strangle hold they exhibit.

Yeah!!! Let's nationalize them oil companies like we did medicine. Better yet. Let's just put them all out of business. Algore and his crazies will be happy. Oh wait, maybe not since his carbon footprint is bigger than 98% of us.

So is that your method of disputing the screwing the American public has been and continues to get from the almighty oil industry? Go nuts and blame in on the last administration with your rationale.
In actuality I think it has something to do with oil futures.

I'm sorry you have such limited mental capacity to understand complex systems.
