Yes, you just comfort yourself with those thoughts and possibly continue on in another thread. This is not the place.

In actuality I think it has something to do with oil futures.

Tell us about the past few months of futures. The oil companies will make sure their margins are improved and they warned us. Harvey is just a good excuse to really take care of themselves.

I got fed up with the price manipulation ten years ago and bought a plug-in car and solar collectors. I make my own electricity for the house and the car. That was my independence day. The price of gas will always be as high as possible, sunlight will never cost more than its current price.

When oil refineries stop refining because of a hurricane, you can expect gasoline prices to rise. Our local prices went from $2.25 to about $2.50 overnight.

I better gas up the car quick so I can save $2.50 now.

I can't tell you exactly how pricing is based. 20% of the nation's refineries are currently shut down temporarily. I'm sure that the price of gas futures went up. Somehow, the price that companies have to pay for their future gas (the money they're paying out now) is passed on to us at the pump (in prices that we pay now).

It seems that the suppliers can do the price increases at any amount they want. In Indianapolis, it went from $2.19 to $2.49 and it will stay there, using the "excuse" of the refineries being closed. Trouble is, the gas in their tanks is already paid for at the lower price. So they get the increased cost on that gas and the the next refills as well. Oh well, you have to refuel, so it's another short hair pull we have to tolerate.

If anyone is planning a remodeling project or expects to be building soon, it's likely that building materials will get more scarce and higher priced as the massive rebuilding in Texas gets underway. So it might be a good idea to get the stuff before the hoarders get it all!! :-)

Yep - that's how shortages are created. I better get mine before someone else gets it. We create the shortages which create the price increases. We humans are so predictable.
