Why B&H (and reputable camera stores) are the logical choice.

I've bought cameras and computers from B&H Photo for over 20 years. I trust them! I receive great service. I've never had a problem with them. I can't make those same remarks about other retailers!!!

I am usually not one who participates much in forums but the stories about B&H reminded me of an incident with them a number of years ago. It was Christmas time and I was part of a very large crowd at the old B&H store. We were at least eight deep at the main counter when a woman became the next customer. She laid down an AMEX card on the counter and said that she knew nothing about photography or cameras but wanted to buy her boyfriend a good 35mm camera. You could have heard a pin drop at that point as we all strained to listen to the conversation that ensued. The salesman asked her some basic questions about what she knew of the level of sophistication of her boyfriend and then laid out three cameras – one basic, one intermediate and one highly sophisticated. He then told her of the pros and cons of each and what she should consider given what she knew of her boyfriend. Her response was to turn around and ask the crowd what we thought she should buy. This resulted in a spirited discussion that lasted over fifteen minutes. Finally, she thanked us and made her pick [intermediate camera] to much applause and lots of “holiday” wishes. Of course, she then bought almost as much as the price of the camera in accessories.

In contrast to this story, the following spring I visited one of those numerous grey market stores [on the second floor for those of you who may remember the name] in the city. They had put a very large ad out that touted a very popular “Nikon camera and lens” with an excellent price that beat all of the competition. A man was trying to return his purchase because the lens was not Nikon. His request was denied. It was pointed out that the ad specifically said “and lens” which meant that it was not a Nikon lens and that he should read the ads more carefully. Enough said.

BTW, I have been buying from both B&H and Adorama since the mid 1960s.

Good story. To me the most important part is your last thought that any organization can make mistakes but it's what they do about it that counts. This story just reinforces my thoughts about B&H.

Thanks for commenting. That is the story! All the rest happens millions of times a day all over, but few companies resolve it like B&H did. Thanks to all others who shared their experiences too.

I started buying from B&H from the time I first saw their ads in the photo mags. I stocked my photography needs from them since. Only once, around 1984, did I not get exactly what I ordered, and since I could use the item (light stand), I kept it rather than return it. Adorama and Cameta have, likewise been just as reliable and fair; and as someone mentioned, Roberts Camera in Indianapolis.

I know we like to use the acronym "ABC" as a term for fairness and reliability, and I think it could be improved by restating it to "ABCR".

I've been a B&H customer for at least 25 years. But I don't worship the ground they stand on like some of these posters. There are other companies whose products and services match and sometimes exceed those of B&H and that's a fact.

All, I know that it may seem to be a unusual headline, but let me tell you my story.

I sent some camera's and gear to B&H to sell to them recently. About $2,000 worth, so not a small box. Some of the stuff did not come up on the online calculator, but I just created another excel sheet and listed the extras, put a note in to call me before they accepted the stuff, and off it went.

Well, people being what they are, the next thing is, I get a check in the mail. No accounting for what they gave me on anything. What about my note to call me?

So, I called them and asked for a list of prices. Come to find out, a camera, like new AW130, was not on the list. Seems they did not want it. So, I said, "return it as your website says you will." There is where the problem comes in. They have a section where stuff they do not want goes. And it is not easy to find something so small once it hits there. So, I said, "well then, send me a check for $135.00 as that is what another store will give me." The person on the other end negotiated a price of $110 with me, and I agreed, as they have taken returns, and done other things for me over the years that cost them, etc. that were not their fault, and I figure that it will all balance out in the end.

Here is where the trust and reputation of a good camera store comes in. A few days pass, and nothing happens, so I sent a message to Herschel Waldner who is on this site. I explained the situation to him. Got an email almost instantly and he said he would look into it. The next day, HE CALLED ME. When does that ever happen? We chatted for a while going over their commitment to excellence and what he wanted to do. What he said he would do for me is to be sure that I get not only the $110, but they would also throw in the extra $25 so I would get the full $135.

Nothing happens for 3 days, and then yesterday, two checks arrive in the mail. Yup, $135.

Now, you would think that this story is not worth telling over $135, and I would normally agree with you. But, what is the value of trust? When we deal with a company that is 1,000 miles away, trust that they will do what they say they will do, what is the value of them actually doing it.

Their people made a mistake in the original handling. But, they have 2,400 people working there, and let's face it, we all can make a mistake. But it is how they fix it that shows the true character of a company. And their handling of it was perfect in the end.

So, that is why it pays to deal with B&H and any other of the top very few reputable companies in the camera business.
All, I know that it may seem to be a unusual head... (show quote)

I just made an order myself from B&H a few days ago for three glass filters and two cassettes of 35mm film. Yes, due to a slight complication we had to speak on the phone to work everything out. Another successful and happy purchase from B&H.

Dick,

Thank you for the kind words and taking the time and trouble to express your confidence and trust in B&H. A special thanks for your consistent blow by blow depiction of the events and your feelings during the course of this issue. As I often do with UHH comments, I will make a point of bringing your comment to the attention of the founder of B&H as it will please him greatly and reassure him that his philosophy of keeping the customer first is being strictly adhered to whenever and wherever possible.

I appreciate the honorable mention but I am but a small cog in a large wheel of dedicated folks here committed to making every effort to keep the customer informed and satisfied both before and after a product purchase.

We at B&H Photo are grateful for your continued patronage and trust and look forward to serving you again in the years to come.

All the best to you and yours.

HERSHEL

Hershel. Sorry you had to get involved over a $25 Dispute.
I enjoy doing business with B&H. Would never involve you for $25. Just saying.

Lots of testimonials here so let me add mine. I bought my first Nikon at Adorama in 1979 and have been going there ever since. Never an unresolvable problem. Though I had seen ads from B&H for decades, I bought my first item from them only 6 months ago, and it was also a pleasure, so I now have two excellent, fair and reputable suppliers to choose from. What more could a photographer ask for?

The only reason I bought my last two camera's from National Camera Exchange and not B&H is that NCE is a 15 minute drive frim my house. They give reasonable trade in prices, have an annual tent sale at which there are lots of goodies and they buy back old stuff if it ain't too old and is in usable shape. When I want sonething that NCE doesn't have I go to B&H.

It's quite alright and not a problem. If we can get a customer satisfied by amicably resolving their issue then the amount is of little significance it's the end result that counts. But thank you for thinking of me just the same.

I cannot say enough good things about B and H and also KEH in Atlanta for used equipment. My one experience with Adorama was also very good. You cannot go wrong if you stick with these three stores. Unfortunately, I have had far better experiences with these stores, which are almost clear across the country for me, than with camera stores in my own city, especially for used equipment.
