Hi all. I am about to purchase another camera and would like to get some feedback. The path is clear, if I get new, but I am considering buying refurbished and spend the extra saved towards a lens. If I buy a Nikon refurbished camera, and since it only comes with a 90 day warranty, given that the 7200 has lots of bells and whistles, (some, like video, I may never or rarely use) what protocol can I subject the camera to that might be more likely to show me a problem? I know it seems like I'm asking you to use your crystal ball, I am just nervous about buying a camera with only 90 days. Has anyone had a problem with refurbished cameras from Nikon? I apologize I am not more clear, but I hope you all understand my concern. I don't want to be penny wise, pound foolish. Thanks in advance.

Usually, not always, but usually, if there is something wrong with a refurbished or new, it's going to happen sometime soon, well within the 90 days. That said, one never knows. Nikon, like Canon and Sony, make good stuff. Usually not a problem. Refurbished cameras are interesting, many on this site have the unrealistic view that these cameras have been comprehensively inspected by a team of experts, nothing could be further from the truth. Most refurbished have been returned by folks who just did not like them, or, have had a small glitch. That glitch has been repaired by a technician, could be an experienced technician, could be a guy on his first day, any way, the point is they fix the APPERANT problem. They do a check to see if the camera is within SPECS. They DO NOT do a comprehensive check, that costs money, but they do make sure the camera is operating within guidelines. SO, like I said, these refurbished cameras are a good value and should operate as new, if they do not, they are going to do so within the 90 day period, and most camera manufactures, if these refurbished cameras need service, will take care of you. Good luck and keep on shooting until the end.

Over a number of years I have bought several refurbished cameras from Nikon without ever having a problem. Every time the camera has looked brand new and behaved as it should in every way. I recently bought a D7200 from them and I'm totally satisfied with the performance of the camera. It seems like the way to go to me, it's good for the customer and it's very likely that Nikon isn't going to do anything to damage their great reputation.
Good luck with your purchase.

Watch out for a "seller refurbished" camera; that means the person (or company) selling the camera refurbished it; some of the trusted sites on UHH (Cameta, B&H, Adorama) would support their cameras if they refurbished them but I would avoid any seller refurbs coming from any other source. "Manufacturer refurbished" means it was refurbished by a manufacturer authorized camera repair center and you should have no problem with that source.

I bought a canon 6d refurbished from Canon with a 1 year warranty. In 7th month the camera locked up. I sent it to Canon and they fixed it in a week. Totally happy with my purchase and service. Check with Nikon and see if they provide your camera refurbished with the one year warranty.

How do you get to the menus that show shutter count and do any calibrations that I can do? I have a Nikon Coolpix P900.

Calibrations depend on camera model.

I've always had good luck with refurbished: cameras and computers both. I'm just very careful of from whom I purchase the item.

After reading about many of the Hog readers buying refurbished from Canon & Nikon I bit the bullet and purchased the D750 from Nikon back in Feb. Looks and shoots like brand new. ( only thing it did not come with was a manual ). They even had an additional 10% off for one day. I'd say... go for it.
Good luck from GA.

You have to insert you memory card into the computer and get on a web site that does shutter counts and enter your last shot on the memory card.

Do you know anyone who has one and you consider him an expert? Let him test it for you. Alternatively, do you have a good camera store or camera repair expert near you. For 20 bucks I bet they would give it a simple go over for any problems.

The majority of Refurbs are cameras that arrive at the store in damaged packaging, or are returned by a customer within the first few days because the customer didn't like or couldn't really pay for the camera. Some even are from unethical folks who buy a camera or a lens for a weekend shoot and then return it on Monday and demand their money back. very few are customer discovered problems. All are sent back through the test bench where the manufacturer smoke tests the items and then sends them on their way. 90+ % of electronic items that fail electronically will fail within the first 24 hours.

I have no fear of buying Refurb

Cameta extends the warranty to one year on refurbished. Nikon picks up the first 90 days and they warranty it out to one year.
