I have bought two refurbished cameras - both D7100 - and one lens from Nikon. All three were excellent buys and I never had a problem.

All my Canon equipment was purchased from their website. Never a problem, plus they give a one year warranty.

As others have stated, buying the Nikon refurbished camera from Cameta gives the best warranty coverage - one year.

I bought my D7100 from them about four years ago, it was in perfect condition. Cameta's service is impeccable.

Note that the camera is currently out of stock, but I'm guessing that they would still accept your order.

I use Nikon and Canon. I recently bought a refurbished Canon and it comes with the same warranty as a new camera. Nikon only offers 90 days on refurbished as you have all stated. Just an FYI. 😃

One good thing about buying refurbished is that they should be free of some of the initial problems like back focus issues or oil splatters on sensors, etc. Can't remember if it was a D7100 or D7200 that I sent in under warranty & they fixed two other things at the same time they fixed the back focus issue. I am not familiar with the Cameta warranty. I know that I am a Adorama VIP member & as such get a full 1 year warranty if I buy a Nikon refurb. But the additional 9 months is not through Nikon. Try to get the shutter count & make sure it isn't a grey market camera.

If what you are really interested in is a "shakedown" then you should make a list of the features that are important and master and test them all in the first couple of months. This would involve reading the manual almost cover to cover and jotting down interesting features that you want to test. It would be a great learning experience. Or there is the extended warranty option.

Great response! First priority: actually perform the functions on your check list. Then check features you do not intend to use for now: video, interval shooting, multiple exposure, BIF, BBF, ???

It'll lower your risk and serve the learning curve.
(It will really help if you can enlist a friend who has experience with your new model to ride shotgun.)

It's pretty hard to beat a good refurbished camera, especially from the ABC vendors. To my knowledge, there have been very few issues with reforms. As far as putting a camera through it's paces to see if it's going to fail in some area, I don't think you can do that. If something is going to fail, it will do it on its own without being encouraged to do so by the user. Anymore, cameras are pretty darned reliable.

B&H Photo was selling refurbished D7200 cameras for $789. But it appears that offer is over. I have not heard of Nikon selling extended warranty on refurbished. The extended warranty would must likely come from the camera shop that sells the camera, not Nikon USA. I would suggest you check Adorama, or Cameta Photo for availability. And don't fall prey to ridiculously lower prices like 42nd Street Photo. They are most likely gray market, and if your camera needs repair, you are SOL. Good luck.

Hi all. I am about to purchase another camera and would like to get some feedback. The path is clear, if I get new, but I am considering buying refurbished and spend the extra saved towards a lens. If I buy a Nikon refurbished camera, and since it only comes with a 90 day warranty, given that the 7200 has lots of bells and whistles, (some, like video, I may never or rarely use) what protocol can I subject the camera to that might be more likely to show me a problem? I know it seems like I'm asking you to use your crystal ball, I am just nervous about buying a camera with only 90 days. Has anyone had a problem with refurbished cameras from Nikon? I apologize I am not more clear, but I hope you all understand my concern. I don't want to be penny wise, pound foolish. Thanks in advance.

If you buy refurbished through Cameta they add free warranty to one year. That is enough time for any manufacturing defects to manifest.

IMHO Nikon refurbs are better than new. Early manufacture failures shaken out and individual attention by a tech.

Usually, not always, but usually, if there is something wrong with a refurbished or new, it's going to happen sometime soon, well within the 90 days. That said, one never knows. Nikon, like Canon and Sony, make good stuff. Usually not a problem. Refurbished cameras are interesting, many on this site have the unrealistic view that these cameras have been comprehensively inspected by a team of experts, nothing could be further from the truth. Most refurbished have been returned by folks who just did not like them, or, have had a small glitch. That glitch has been repaired by a technician, could be an experienced technician, could be a guy on his first day, any way, the point is they fix the APPERANT problem. They do a check to see if the camera is within SPECS. They DO NOT do a comprehensive check, that costs money, but they do make sure the camera is operating within guidelines. SO, like I said, these refurbished cameras are a good value and should operate as new, if they do not, they are going to do so within the 90 day period, and most camera manufactures, if these refurbished cameras need service, will take care of you. Good luck and keep on shooting until the end.

As is the case with many topics, some here say refurbished get more love than the production run generally, while others state the refurbished tag only implies that whatever was errant has been fixed and that the camera has NOT been double blessed. Scratching my head. Either way, I have gained more confidence from the many helpful and thoughtful replies. The Cameta warranty sounds great, but they are out of stock. I am leaning towards Adorama (best price):they also have an extended warranty. I will see if I can find out about actuations. BTW: Is there any place other than KEH and abc where I should be considering used lens?

Thanks for your reply. I also noted the third party warranty is not them. The same is true at BH and of course most of the listings on amazon. I am going to try to get shutter count before I decide for good. Regards!
