I prefer the B & W. The color is pushed and the contrast is too dark for me. HDR would capture the bright and dark areas better. David

Thank you, Meives, for your thoughtful comment and suggestion. I appreciate it. I am only now beginning to experiment with HDR, but very infrequently.

I actually like the color one. The house does not stand out as much (to me)in the black and white, Maybe just needs some post processing adjustment. Still get the feel of abandon house on the windswept prairie in the color version.

Thank you, novnan. I appreciate your comments about the color photo. A color preference is still in the minority, but there are considerations that do make it appealing.

It seems as though the (main) subject is the house, which is Blk &Wht - except the roof. It "fits" the scene better (my opinion) in B&W.

I love the B&W. While the sky and house in color are striking, the water detracts from the photo. I would actually clone stamp it out and see if you like it better.

Thanks for your kind comment, srfmhg. In the B&W, I agree that the water is a distraction, and cloning may be a better option than cropping because I would like to keep the entire tree in the picture.

I agree 100%. The B&W is great of the house, the water is secondary. A different perspective might work, but your light will be different on the subject, and the background may not work. I think you did great with what you had, might even get in closer for a tighter shot!

THank you for your thoughtful response, msomike. Much appreciated. A couple other replies also mentioned trying for a different perspective and a closer crop that includes more of the house. I did take a number of shots from various places, but I found this one to be the best of the lot. I will play a bit with crops to see what fits best. Thanks again.

The only thing I would change is the lack of cropping. Get rid of the far-off little dip in the ground with its trees and water, plus about 30% of the foreground.

Thanks for the suggestion, johnbee. I will be trying a couple of different crops to see what fits best. Thanks again.

Well done, Cotondog! I prefer the second..seems to fit it better.

Thank you, Sue. I always appreciate your comments. I agree that the B&W is the way to go with this one.

My main problem with the B&W is that the water fades into the picture on the far right, where it is more pronounced in the color pic. There might be more issues with either one or both.

Thanks for looking and for any comments.

color for me...i love the way the blue sky looks cotondog...good job on both though!

Color, but a little less saturated.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder but as the artist, what were you trying to convey and what did you see when you were there? Did you see an old house sitting on a hill or did you see blue skies, blue water and a rusty roof. The B&W makes much more of a statement on the age of the house and the mood of the sky at the time. While I like the rusty roof and storage barrel in color, the B&W makes a much more dramatic statement about the old house sitting all alone and abandoned on the hill.

Thank you, Lowrider, for your thoughtful comment. Yes, I try for the mood, a statement about the past in all of my old barn and abandoned home pics. And I agree, the B&W in this case captures that much better than the color. Thanks again.

Even without the color your mind would have painted that sky blue and the winter foliage is not that far wrong so...
You can almost hear the paint peeling.
One question; did you shoot it in grey or convert it? Man those clouds are something on there own.
Yes, I like vurry much.

Hi OutBack. Thanks for your kind comment. I shot in color and converted to B&W with Nik Silver Effects Pro. I like the clouds better in the B&W version.
