Well, sleepydrdr's birthday is coming up so since she buys her clothes at walmart and doesn't need ANYTHING...I was thinking about getting her a teleconverter for her set up. I have heard many opinions on teleconverters...but I am looking for a few more from folks who have hands on experience...any and all comments welcome.

When used properly a teleconverter can be a great little tool. A good teleconverter used with good glass by someone who knows what they are doing, will more often than not yield good results. Any teleconverter used on mediocre glass will more than likely result in a low quality image. The teleconverter can't be blamed for poor image content, that's up to the person using the teleconverter. Personally I feel the teleconverter would make a nice gift. It's up to the giftee to learn when and how to use it.

The Nikon TC-14EII has been superseded by the TC-14EIII. The cost new is nearly $500. Same price for the 2X. The 1.7X is your other option, $400 new. I didn't want to pay that much for a teleconverter, so I purchased a third party Brand, Kenko 1.4X for less than $150. I am satisfied with it. Though I don't use it a lot.

The Nikon 1.4 tele works well with the Nikkor 200-500.

I would stay with the Nikon products, after trying Kenko extension tubes I went to Nikon tubes while they are manual and cost twice the price they work 100% of the time and they are all metal construction!!! I can't understand putting a very expensive lens or a camera on a plastic P.O.C.( I am by no means rich) but I do require high quality Tools, if need be I will do without until I can afford them. Maybe if the camera and lens are light weight it would not be a problem.
And I'm sure with the quality of Sleepy's work you wouldn't want to take a chance of so so results!!

I have the Nikon 1.4 TC 111 which is specially designed for the latest Nikkor lenses. Mine is almost permanently attached to my Nikkor 300mm f4 PF VR and used on a D500 for wildlife photography. The IQ remains superb, as far as I'm concerned. I use this combination for close ups of insects and birds/dragonflies etc in flight. I display my images on a 55" Samsung 4k TV and have absolutely no complaints about the IQ. As I normally shoot at f8 - f13 the loss of one stop of light is of no concern to me.

I have no complaints about the Kenko 1.4 TC. Good price and good results.

It doesn't seem to be a great combo, but usable. The biggest issue is the dark viewfinder and AF performance, which will drop. Probably ok for non-moving subjects, but moving ones can present a challenge. Might be better off cropping a bit more and saving the money spent on a TC.

Could I jump in here & ask would a Kenko 1.4 TC work with my Nikon 28-300 lens? I have a D7100.

I have tried the Nikon 1.4x v.II with my 200-500 on the D500 and found it somewhat soft I will borrow a 1.4 III and try it out

I am shooting with a D810 + Nikkor AFS 300mm f/4 + TC17EII and getting excellent results. I bought the TC from Henry's Camera in Toronto, used but in excellent in box condition for C$300. The max aperture of f/6.7 is no problem and the AF is spot on.

It works with mine on a D750. Should be no problem on a D7100.

Unlike others on this forum I have personal, hands on experience using the Nikon TC-14E II 1.4 with the Nikon 200-500 on a Nikon D810. The first thing you will notice is how FIRMLY the units fit together, there is NO wobble at all, none. Focusing is fast and very accurate. I have noticed very, very, little to no IQ degradation from the Teleconverter, images are sharp, sharp, sharp. However, I use the 200-500 on the D500 as I use this lens for birding and the D500 is light years ahead of the D810 for frames per second. But, back to your question, the TC-14E II is a gem with the 200-500 and you can get it mint off ebay in the box at very good prices, why pay more than you have to .

I have a kenko 2x tc and it sits in my camera bag. my d7100 and tokina 2.8 macro is the only lens that it works with and it is very soft! If you get a tc I'd say go with the Nikon. I've seen photos with the 1.4 used and they looked great. Good luck.

Thanks for your input. There are so many opinions on this issue that its difficult to make a decision. I found one on B&H that is a Nikon refurb and I think I'm going to pull the trigger.

What I was looking for is someone with the same set up to say yea or nay.
