Checking Nikon's compatibility chart for lenses and converters, the 200-500mm telephoto shows the following for all of its available converters (see attached) in this order:
TC-14E II TC-14E III TC-17E II TC-20E II TC-20E III TC80-125E
It will NOT work on the 200-500mm (see Nikon compatibility chart from my previous post)

Please read the footnotes at the bottom of the chart. "AF Limitations" only means that it will only work with cameras that support f/8 AF. Those are the D4/D4S, Df, 800/800E, 810/810A, 600/610, 750, 7100 and 7200.
So yes, it WILL WORK on those bodies WITH OUT AF limitations!
EDIT: Oops! Also the D5 and D500.
To throw another wrench into the works, the TC14e iii may be better optically to the TC 14EII or not. I can't comment on that because I have the ii and have not tried the iii. The iii version is not compatible with some of the older Nikon lenses, e.g. 300, 400, 500 and 600mm.
That's why I got the 14eii version ($300 instead of $500). It works with my used $3400 400mm f/2.8D. The 14eii is only compatible with the new $9500 400mm. I'm happy and saved over $6000 on this combo. This also works perfectly on my D7100, D500, D800 and D750 with the Nikon 70-200 f2.8 and 200-500f5.6 lenses.

The Nikon 1.4 tele works well with the Nikkor 200-500.
How about getting a D5300 instead?

We read the same chart...according to Nikon it will work with the cameras mentioned in the footnotes.

I would stay with the Nikon products, after trying Kenko extension tubes I went to Nikon tubes while they are manual and cost twice the price they work 100% of the time and they are all metal construction!!! I can't understand putting a very expensive lens or a camera on a plastic P.O.C.( I am by no means rich) but I do require high quality Tools, if need be I will do without until I can afford them. Maybe if the camera and lens are light weight it would not be a problem.
And I'm sure with the quality of Sleepy's work you wouldn't want to take a chance of so so results!!

Kenko has several lines of tele converters- Buy the PRO line- they'll work with more Nikon lenses than the Nikon branded TCs will.

IMHO, you are best off getting an OEM TC and one that is specifically recommended for the lens it is to be used with. As with everything else, some are better than others and the Nikon ones are on the higher side of that equation. Also note, that while possible, the new, less expensive, slower zooms were really not intended for use with TCs. While they may work, and may even autofocus, the autofocus will be slowed by the reduced light hitting the sensors. TCs are mostly intended for faster prime lenses, an arena in which they shine. My 400/2.8 is almost as good with a 1.4TC as it is without and I use this combination quite a bit during daylight outdoors. At night, or indoors, not so much, mostly not at all. I also have a Nikon 2x TC, which I have used with the 400 for very specific shots such as the outfielders in baseball. Normally the use of the 2x is in situations where its that or nothing. With the newer cameras I would normally just crop tighter as opposed to actually using the 2x, although I do use it upon occasion. Best of luck!

If you understand the limitations of that chart the capabilities of the body are part of the equation. A D810 autofocuses @f8, most other bodies autofocus to f5.6. So, a D810 could use the 1.4 converter with a f5.6 lens WIDE OPEN if you can set exposure with the ISO.

BUT.....It WILL slow focus acquisition down quite a bit!

For the same price you can get a D7100 refurb that will work with the 200-500 AND with the 1.4 TC, pushing the equivalent FOV over 1000mm instead of just 750mm.
The TC-17E II, TC-20E II and TC-20E III will NOT do auto-focus, only the TC-14E II TC-14E III with the cameras that you correctly mentioned.
Here are the problems with sticking a teleconverter on a 200-500mm lens. It will "bludgeon" image quality, and AF probably will not work since it will increase the effective aperture on the lens to an f8, at which most cameras will not autofocus....or if they do, will not focus well.

Or, just crop in p/p to get the same fov.

Could I jump in here & ask would a Kenko 1.4 TC work with my Nikon 28-300 lens? I have a D7100.
The Kenko is fine, but during a 2 week period where I had the lens on consignment, I found it to be pretty soft at 300mm, so trying to use it with a 1.4x TC is definitely not a good idea. Unfortunately I had to return the lens before I tested it with my Kenko Pro 300 1.4X.
