Or, just crop in p/p to get the same fov.
Cropping instead of using the 1.4 TC = throwing away 12 of the 24 MP (D7100 or D5300).

You spoke about using the D7100 instead of the D800 to push the equivalent fov to over 1000mm. My comment about cropping was regarding cropping from the D800 as an option vs. using the D7100 just for the narrower fov. It's six of one, half dozen of another.

This thread has been very confusing! I was responding to MtnMan who suggested using a 24 MP D5300.
With a 36 MP D800 Cropping is still throwing away pixels but retaining a respectable 18 MP which is still less than 24.
It's more like 6 of one and 4.5 of the other.
Now we're splitting hairs. And I know that pixel quality and quantity can be adjusted in post processing, but that's like artificial insemination, not close to the satisfaction and pleasure of getting it right "in camera".

So, the best thing to do would be to fill the 36mp sensor up with the subject, which is what long telephoto lenses are for in the first place. Why spend thousands of dollars for a long lens only to have the subject still be restricted to the center portion of the shot?
