Now that I'm retired, I plan to spend a lot more time hiking & taking pictures. Normally, when I'd wear a hat, it would be a baseball cap or similar. However, now that I am retired, I decided to get a better outdoor hat for keeping shaded and cool.
After looking at lots of options, to include bush hats from Costco and the "Crusher" from Duluth Trading, and looking at lot of online reviews, I have ordered a hat from a company called "Tilley". The model is the LTM8. Anyone have experience with Tilley hats?
Yes my dad had one for years and loved it. Washed it many times and still kept its shape. Loved the chin strap. Kept it secure in wind. Dad would highly recommend it!
I've had a Tilley for the past 20 years. I have worn it on many fishing and hunting trips and when it gets dirty, I just toss it in the washing machine along with white clothes and stretch it over a coffee can to dry. Still looks like new. Mine looks like the LTM3 air-flow.

One of the things that sold me on Tilley, despite there rather high cost, was how durable reviewers said they are. I think the LTM8 that I bought is a relatively new model that has more mesh that some of their other hats. Since I live in desert climate, I thought it would make sense to have one with as much air flow as possible, while at the same time providing adequate sun protection.
Also the clothes are great. Same wash and wear material?!

Another place for great cloths (Fire Hose pants, excellent shirts, etc., is
www.duluthtrading.com I have several pairs of their excellent and very sturdy Fire Hose pants! Love them!
Count me in ...... I've worn a tilley on many a hiking trip and while shooting photography. The shade alone has done wonders in preserving my eyesight. Mine too has been washed many, many times ...... and if you lose it while out on the water, it floats. If you snap it up on one side, it looks like an Australian adventurer's hat.
No. alas went to my brother.
Had a Tilley hat for years, liked it very much.
Yes. Several years ago they were approved for use by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary while on patrol. Many members of the Auxiliary are older than active duty C.G. and concerned about protecting from sun exposure. I used my Tilley for just about any time I needed a hat until I lost it when we were wiped out by a forest fire. They are extremely well made, very comfortable, and come with a lifetime guarantee against damage (unfortunately, I was unable to find any identifiable ashes). I would not hesitate to recommend a Tilley.

On my second Tilley because like you I lost 1st one, about 18 years ago coming back from snorkeling off Belize in a fast boat back to our sm. mother ship. I was a bit sea sick from bouncing up and down and neglected to use chin strap. Later called Tilley, explained my lose, and they sent me a new one at half price. Still use it.

Tilley hats are great. I now use a stetson crushable and depending on the weather stetson straw (for sun protection) or felt for rain and dust

They're expensive and still a little hot even with the ventilation system, but, they have a lifetime warranty. Great workmanship Basil.
