New Tilley Hat on the way
Tilley is a Canadian company and been around for almost 40 years. They have a life-time warranty on their hats if you wear them out, not sure about on their clothing. If your hat is lost or stolen they'll replace it for 50% of the cost. I've never heard of another company or manufacturer of anything that will stand by their products like they do.

They're expensive and still a little hot even with the ventilation system, but, they have a lifetime warranty. Great workmanship Basil.
I wonder if this new version I bought with full mesh crown instead of just mesh along top will be cooler. That's what I'm hoping.
Absolutely love mine. I don't think you will be even remotely disappointed.

Finest hats in the world. I have two, the original, all cotton, version and a newer wide brim version for wear in the tropics. The original cotton one (still available) is great for golfing in Arizona - just soak it in water and shake it out. As the water evaporates it keeps your head cool.

Now that I'm retired, I plan to spend a lot more time hiking & taking pictures. Normally, when I'd wear a hat, it would be a baseball cap or similar. However, now that I am retired, I decided to get a better outdoor hat for keeping shaded and cool.
After looking at lots of options, to include bush hats from Costco and the "Crusher" from Duluth Trading, and looking at lot of online reviews, I have ordered a hat from a company called "Tilley". The model is the LTM8. Anyone have experience with Tilley hats?

We all have Tilley hats in our family. They wash up well and have a lifetime warranty. We have had ours for about 15-20 years. They are a little expensive and a little hot. Have not tried the ones with with mesh.
I, too, have had a Tilley hat for about 20+years. I forgot the model number, but it has been washed several times and still looks new. I especially like the fact that you can crush the brim back when you bring your camera's viewfinder up to your eye. With harder brimmed hats, like baseball caps, you usually have to swivel the cap's brim to the rear to use cameras at eye level.

As I mentioned in my original post, I'd usually wear some form of baseball cap, but what you mentioned is one of the reasons I wanted to get something better. When I'd be out on a shoot with a baseball cap, I'd wear it normally for sun shade, but then have to flip it around backwards to take a picture due to the stiff bill. Besides, a baseball cap doesn't really provide much "shade"

I have two, and they are definitely worth the money. They also have a pocket in the crown for ID, etc., and if I recall correctly, they float (if you forget to use the chin strap while sailing)

Mine is always in the truck for fishing or rain.
I like men's hats cuz the brim is bigger. For many years I've worn Henschel brand. And I just LOVE it. I have a brown one and a green one. I will have to look into the Tilley hats.

You will not go wrong with a Tilley hat. I own three. Two are winter hats and the third is a wide brim with mesh made of that nylamtium material. 10 years old. Been washed dozens of times and is still in good shape.

I did an internet search for "nylamtium" and can only find is as related to Tilley hats. So must be a proprietary material, or their fancy name for some other material.

Many (or most) Tilley hats have a snap on the side of the brim. I had a shoemaker put one on the front of the brim so I could snap it up when taking pictures in portrait mode. With a baseball cap, I have to swivel it around so the brim is in the rear, making me look like some withered old high school jock wannabe.

Don't know what mine is but it was an earthy green and is now brown with hints of green in it. Mine is the hemp version which I don't think keeps its shape as well as the cotton ones. But I wear pretty much whenever I go out. Extra warmth in the Winter, extra shade in the Summer. You'll not regret this purchase.
There's a story going around of a Swiss Zoo keeper who looks after elephants. His hat has been through the elephants digestive system 3x and after a wash he continues to wear it.
Congratulations Basil, you picked the best. I have two Tilley hats model, LMT 6, one beige, the other green. They are practically indestructible, will last for years. Mine has two straps, on under chin and the other behind your head, because hats can blow off from behind. I think the LTM 8 is a newer model, maybe with a larger brim.
