NH and Vermont mountains for Autumn have some of the best scenic routes. Towing a trailer on the Kancamangus might be grueling on your auto, but if you can stay in Lincoln and take a day to drive to Conway you won't be disappointed (www.kancamagushighway.com). Scenic vistas, mountains, rivers and waterfalls! Then on to Nova Scotia, Cape Breton/Halifax maybe?
Follow Maine's coast (route 1) as much as you can(that will take you 3 months by itself!). Stops in Acadia National Park (Cadillac Mtn for sunrise), light house stops for the Pemaquid(Bristol, ME), Portland Head, and the Nubble (Cape Neddick/York, ME) are very popular spots. Check this sight out for more info http://www.newenglandlighthouses.net.
How about Bucksport for this story, http://www.roadsideamerica.com/story/6159.
Back through the NH seacoast, Portsmouth then down route 1A along the coast to Hampton Beach(will be pretty much closed up after Oct), then where ever the roads take you!
Best of luck in your travels and photo road trip!

When you go through anywhere in New England, especially Maine, Vermont, and New Hampshire you will be in the midst of the best fall foiliage, in estimation, in the entire country. The covered bridges in Vermont are iconic. As you come down the east coast, spend a day in Mystic, Connecticut you will see a history of Naval ships. Good luck and I envy you!

Upstate NY is like New England even though the name is not as catchy. Long views of the Finger Lakes rimmed by low mountains and vineyards can be especially nice. If you are on I-90 (NY State Thruway), detour south to Route 5/20 near Canandaigua, then take 21 south. There is a surprise that will make you stop the car and get out the camera. You can't miss it. Route 3 through the Adirondacks is also beautiful.

Don't miss Baltimore's Inner Harbor. Photo opps abound there and a harbor cruise is nice, too. Good shots from the boat approaching the harbor
on the return trip. Delaware is very nice and plenty of photo opps. The ocean and bay areas are close to one another (about 1 1/2 - 2 miles apart) This is the Rehoboth Beach, Dewey Beach and Bethanny Beach areas. All just a few minutes apart down Rte 1 (Coastal Hwy). There's also historic Lewes, DE. Very quaint and Cape Henlopen which is an historical beach with war time watch towers, etc.
Hope this helps.

Have fun, Personally we couldn't wait to move out to the west coast from DC. However, it will be very different and you may enjoy the east coast more. Who knows? Be aware of the humidity as well. Vermont is very cool, we have visited the state several times over the years. I wasn't into photography when we lived in NoVa, so I couldn't recommend many places. When we moved out to Oregon, we wanted to see the country and took a month to drive across. We skipped everything until we were in Western Nebraska - but we did purchase books for Dakota, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho and of course Oregon. Helped us a lot to find things we were interested seeing.

I would also highly recommend http://roadtrippers.com/?lat=40.80972&lng=-96.67528&z=5

I hope I didn't sound too negative. Enjoy!!!

In South Carolina I recommend Old Sheldon Church ruins in Sheldon. Also down the road from there is Tomately Plantation entrance the 2nd one. Also Beaufort as well as Hilton Head. Hunting Island with the down trees on the beach.
There is Old Town Charleston as well as many many other spots.

Miami County Ohio, just north of Dayton, has a few hundred barns that have been painted with various Quilts. Quite a nice collection if you are anywhere near there. www.homegrowngreat.com if you want to take a look.

With so many locations, it's just not possible to list all the places for photo locations. You could spend the entire 3 months in NY City and not exhaust the possiblites. An idea. When in a given location, why not ask where the best photo locations are, in that area. Example- no point in going to Vermont any other time but october, so as to shoot the best fall leaf colors in the east. But you don't want to be in Northern New England in November unles you like cold weather. So, when you get to a place, give us a shout and ask.

For Vermont, make that around the 1st of October for peak foliage viewing. Also look for the covered bridges while you are there.

On your way to NYC take a detour to Liberty State Park. You will have access to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island as well as a newly restored train station that was the access point for everyone entering the US at a point in time. Also, incredible views of lower Manhattan including the new World Trade Center.

If you are getting to Baltimore you just have to go an hour south to see DC. Outside of the iconic views of monuments take in views from Rock Creek Park... Zoo and flora.

Philadelphia- go the East or West River Drive along the Schuykill River to photo the Ivy League rowing crews practice and race. The falls right by the Philadelphia Art Museum is a huge photo op.

Going North do not miss Martha's Vineyard, MA and the infamous Chappaquidick. On the Vineyard rent a scooter or jeep and head to Menemsha for sunset, Gay Head for cliff views. Take the three/four car Chappy ferry over to Chappaquidick for the nature preserve. The entire island is a photo career in itself.

I could go on as you are Travelling the part of the country where I have lived most of my life. Have a good and safe trip.

Rhode Island has lots of great places to photograph. Our beaches are superb, downtown Providence is picturesque especially during a waterfire. http://waterfire.org/schedule/2016-waterfire-providence-event-schedule/
Newport is also a great place to visit. I could go on and on, but I won't. Stay safe and enjoy your travels.

Marginal Way in Ogunquit, ME is a great walk with many photo ops. 1968 Nasson College Graduate in Springvale, sad to say it is no longer in operation.

I should have mentioned Marginal Way. Just slipped my mind. My cousin graduated from Nasson, around 1975. I grew up in South Berwick, now live in Lebanon, just over the Sanford line.

In New Jersey go to Morristown and Jockey Hollow, where the Tempe Wicke House is... The surrounding areas are all George Washington Headquarters and war sites. Near Totowa, I think, is the Dey Mansion, another wonderful site. at 199 Totowa Road Wayne, NJ. Nyms
