Wow! Thanks for all the kind replies. I intend to get out ASAP and try out the new camera. It's been awhile since I had and used a Nikon (D90), but the look and feel is familiar. And while it came with an owner's manual, I think getting a good guide book is a great idea. I find that owner's manuals are good for telling you what each of the controls does, they don't do much for telling just how and when to use them.

Regarding Best Buy, I couldn't be happier with the experience there at the South Anchorage store. In fact, there was no sales pressure at all. I was initially going to get the D7200 with the 18--140 lens, but I also wanted a longer zoom lens. Unfortunately that would have been out of my budget, so the photo section manager told me about a kit D7100 he had that included the 18-140 and the 55-3000, all for the same price as the 7200 and 18-140. After comparing the two camera, I decided that the upgrades on the D7200 were not sufficient for my needs to not go with the 7100. Anyway, I am happy with the experience, but that may be just for that particular store. Oh, and he threw in a $30.00 Nikon IR remote shutter release for free. I thought that was nice of him.

I expect that this weekend will be spent going over the camera, checking it out, setting up the various buttons and then going out to shoot. I'm hoping for a nice sunset. We've been having tons of wind, which makes things difficult, too. So.......here we go!

Enjoy...I'm sure you'll have lots of fun with it. If you ever make it to my neck of the woods, I'll let you use my em1.

That would be a fun comparison. For some reason, no one here is stocking the Em-1. Perhaps my shopping experience would have been different then. I really liked that 14-150 zoom lens. It just wreaked of high quality.

A great camera and you won't be disappointed. You might, in the future, try the battery grip on that camera as well. If you have large hands like I do, the camera will feel more comfortable to use.
Wife and I are planning a road trip from Florida to Alaska in May. Hope to visit Wasilla and surrounding areas. Might give you a shout on photo ops in the area, if you are willing and interested.
Have fun and start taking those photos. Don't let the sun staying in keep you that way as well. Some of my best photos came from cloudy days!

We have no plans to go anywhere until June, when we go to Texas for our grandson's HS graduation. We, and our daughter and son-in-law are joining forces and getting him a D810 for his graduation. I think he's progressed beyond his D90, and now he is making noises about doing scenics/landscape photography. The D810 should serve him well. He already has a couple FX lenses, so that will work out well to start out with.

I think the D7100 is just going away, being replaced by the D7200, so the kit deal may be Nikon's way of trying to sell off the older models. I suspect that it won't be long before an upgrade to the DD7200 comes out and the same thing will happen to it. Oh, and it came with a nice gear bag, but, like all things "kit," the extra stuff isn't all that terrific. It's more like a huge purse and not very handy. I see a nice camera back pack in my near future. This bag that came with the camera might be ok for putting in the car, but one would not want to carry it anywhere, especially if one is going to be walking any distance at all.

I just got home from Anchorage where I bought a Nikon D7100, new, at Best Buy.

I also checked out the EM-5ii, but while I liked the light weight and loved the 14-150 lens, the camera just felt too small in my hands, so I opted for the Nikon. It feels good in my hands.

You guys and your big hands...I consider the E-M5II to be too big for me - although small hands means I can repair my own cameras.

Never going away. Will always be an exceptional camera. Like everything else, newer models will come and go. The D7200 is a great camera but it is not a de facto D7100 killer. I know because I am fortunate enough to own both.

That's exactly the kit I purchased about two years ago. Since then I also purchased the Tamron 150-600 lens and have taken a number of bird shots with it, and use the 18-140 for many other things such as landscapes, butterflies, and flowers! Also agree with Jim Bob about the bag.
