Best idea. This way voters are not swayed by posted vote counts. Their vote would be without influence.

Here goes my two cents. Person creates contest with set date for all entries. No one can see any photos until that date. Person who creates contest , now having all entries puts them out for viewing and voting. Based on the number of entries (unknown to us) that helps to create the number of times we vote. Example, only 50 entries, then we pick one photo, but say there are 200 entries then we get to pick more, say 5 and so on. I also think we should vote for a 1st place, 2nd, 3rd, 4th.......
So lets say for example you have a contest with 20 entries and one of them is a no brainer, the best by far, and just about everyone votes for it, well then how do you determine 2nd, 3rd........
I have only entered one or two of the contest but I can say it was a boost in my confidence to score 12th out of a few hundred. Would have been nicer to know I was everyones 2nd or 3rd choice, over no ones first choice. Hope that makes sence.

And keep the images in the order in which they were submitted and make this clear at the top of the page.

Ok here's the thing. Most of you are complaining because vote counts are being shown and voting was allowed before all contestants had the chance to enter. Well the contest system that we have set up now allows for votes to be hidden and when to start and stop voting. We have had contests like this in the past. It allows the host of the contest the right to decide what goes on in the contest. I think it is nice to have the choice because maybe we don't want it always the same all the time. It can depend on the kind of contest that is being held.

I personally think it would be better to have a scoring system, but it becomes problematic when we want all members to score 150 photos. I think it would be much easier to score photos if we didn't have to work with a small thumbnail. If we could have a list where they are at 600x800 with the scoring system right next to them and we could easily scroll through them all and score it would make it easier to view and to score or vote on which ones we want.

I like joyfullee's ideas. Sounds good to me and keeping the identity of the photographer anonymous until all the voting is over sounds like a good idea too.

Getting way toooooo complicated .

Simplicity is key.

I think the contest should be that entries are received for x number of days and/or set limited number of entries, whichever comes first.

No voting until all entries have been received.

Each person gets to place a vote for 5 photos. (There are excellent photos and sometimes it's very hard to choose just one from the many entries.) The tally of votes is not to be shown to the voters. Voting should have a time limit, such as votes will be received for 3 days after the contest (submissions have been received) has ended.

After the 3 days of voting, post the top five winners and then allow 1 vote per person for one of the top five.

This voting will announce the winner of the contest.

My thoughts.

This one has my vote.

And while you're at it. don't post running vote tallies. Wait until all votes are in. That will cut the lemming factor.

We already have this option.

Additionally, I have an issue with the small size of the thumbnail images. They are really too small to properly indicate which images are worth a closer look.

That's true. But I'm not sure what would be the appropriate size. If I make the thumbnails bigger, then people on slow connections would have to wait forever to load, say, 200 images just to see what's in the contest.

I don't have the math reference off hand, but I remember reading that a better way to have an election was to give each voter a certain number of votes, say 10, and let them use them however they wanted. One picture could get all 10, two almost equal favorites could get a 6 and a 4, or 10 pictures could get one each.

That's the kind of stuff I'm aiming for. A way to split the voting power among multiple pictures. We need something that's not complicated, not boring, and at the same time mathematically fair. Ideally, without having to resort to arbitrary limits (like top 5 or only 5 votes, etc.) as any such arbitrary limit would be flawed.

Sounds good, top five have a vote off at the end.

This seems to make the most sense. Raw score gets you to the finals. Once the top five have been selected for the run off the 1-5 makes mathematical sense as long as each person has to rank all five photos.

I think multi-stage voting would be too complicated to manage.

We already have the means to implement something like that with the current system. But it's not working out because of the specific circumstances of UHH contests.

Normally, the ratio of voters to contestants/candidates/etc. is very high.
Imagine some small town mayor elections. There might be 2 or 3 candidates with 20,000 voters. So one vote per voter works out really well.

But on UHH, we have something like 300-400 people who are ready to vote, with 150 of them submitting their own pictures. And even if I bump up the internal marketing of the contests to make sure every single UHH user is aware of an ongoing contest, the overall numbers would increase, but the ratio would probably stay the same.

So rather than having a ratio of 20,000:3, we have it as 400:150 (or 8:3).

That's why one vote per user isn't working out well. And five votes per user won't improve the contest system either.

Yes, the scoring system would be the best and the most fair way to rate entries. But I agree, it's simply unrealistic to expect a user to go over all images in the contest. Additionally, having to keep track of which picture you think should be 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and which one should be ...57th would drive people crazy. So that's out.

Heres an idea why not give every voter 1/2 a point then divide that by 30 then take away the original 1/2 pt and add 6 hmmmm that would work

Is there any way to randomize the order the pictures are viewed so it's always changing. That way if it's a large contest there's a better chance that all of the pictures are seen instead of just the ones with the most views or votes?
