Any math wizards here? Redoing UHH contests.
doh, sorry, too complicated for me. With all the different possibilities and variations that could occur. Plus the fact that my solar powered calculator only works when the Sun shines, because like me it's so old that the back-up batteries wont hold a charge anymore lol...

I think one vote per person, but scaled 1 -5. Next, rotate the images. Divide the number of entries by the number of days the contest will run. Then each day move the top group to the bottom, the second group up, etc. until all have rotated to the top. Do not show scores or number of voters until contest is over. Number of views???
More often than not, I like different photos for different reasons. One photo may exhibit great technical competency (which I like). Another may show clever or original thinking (which I like). Still another may possess a truly lovely style, design and composition (which I like). Perhaps each photo could be judged against these criteria and each contest could have multiple winners (one for Technical, one for Originality, and one for Style).
This method is compatible with allowing each voter to have more than one vote. I also agree with the suggestions to keep the photographer's name hidden until after the contest and that thumbnails should be large enough to clearly get a fairly good first impression.

I think the contest should be that entries are received for x number of days and/or set limited number of entries, whichever comes first.
No voting until all entries have been received.
Each person gets to place a vote for 5 photos. (There are excellent photos and sometimes it's very hard to choose just one from the many entries.) The tally of votes is not to be shown to the voters. Voting should have a time limit, such as votes will be received for 3 days after the contest (submissions have been eceived) has ended.
After the 3 days of voting, post the top five winners and then allow 1 vote per person for one of the top five.
This voting will announce the winner of the contest.
My thoughts.

This is (in my opinion) the best choice, but I might add that no mention of the photograher's name be made until after the contest is over. (no watermarks or signatures allowed)

I don't have the math reference off hand, but I remember reading that a better way to have an election was to give each voter a certain number of votes, say 10, and let them use them however they wanted. One picture could get all 10, two almost equal favorites could get a 6 and a 4, or 10 pictures could get one each.
This idea bears repeating. And if the votes could be hidden from view until the end of the contest, so much the better. (Let's not call it an "election" though.....we don't need the Supreme Court's take on this! LOL)

I'm thinking about changing the way the contest system works.
Instead of allowing only one vote per user, I would like to allow unlimited votes with a 5-point system.
Any user would be able grade as many pictures as he/she wants and assign a value from 1 to 5 points/stars/etc. to any picture.
Now the question is how to determine the winner?
Going by the average score won't work. For example, one picture might get 10 votes of 4 points, and have the average score of 4. While another picture might get one vote of 5 points and get the average score of 5. Obviously, the latter isn't necessarily a better picture.
Going by the product won't work either. One picture might get three votes of 4 points for a 12-point product. While another one might get two votes of 5 points for a 10-point product. The former picture would win with such scoring system, while it would be apparent that the latter picture is the better one.
Any suggestions?

You sound like Jay Carney trying to explain one of Obama's faux pas...........
Right then. Each person can vote 9 times on a Wednesday, 4 on a Tuesday, (but only if they have a Royal Fisbin), and will be disqualified for voting if they are bald and watch too much Monty Python, (though determining the latter bit could be challenging.)
Or, it could be kept to one vote per person after all the entries are received, with a closing date for voting equal to the closing date for submissions plus "x" days, at which time the votes are tallied, a winner declared, (who has his or her head shaved and must then watch the "Meaning of Life" one time per vote received.)
How about no more than one vote per picture. Other wise someone could vote for the same picture unlimted times.
If there are thousands of entries, they need to be screened and a selection (maybe 100 but not more than 200) presented to the voters.
The voters should not be allowed to vote on a single picture and leave. To propperly judge, they should score at least x (top 10?) pictures and rank them to insure that they are putting some effort into the process.
Then the photo with the highest average rank wins.
Also, the results should be kept from the voters until the end.
How about I win all the contest and then we don't have to worry about math! Just kidding, I think 5 pictures we can vote on would work great!
Please, one person , one vote. Why complicate a fair and straight forward procedure?
