"I had been shooting from a tripod with timer for group photos and failed to tighten the center column adequately when lowered for transport. Carried the tripod in with armloads of gear, and when pointed down the exquisitely smooth Gitzo column, with camera mounted, slid right out. A 3+' (1M) nose dive to concrete walk landing on corner of pentaprism.
Result- Dent and scratch to pentaprism and corner of body above menu button, continues to function."

My last photography teacher said he went to a Nikon show and the guy kept dropping the camera on the hard floor in an effort to prove that Nikons can take it!

I can personally attest to the fact that a D7100 can survive a 4 foot drop with no apparent damage to the internal parts. Just a minor dent on the corner it landed on.
The 18-55 lens was not so fortunate and went into the trash but the camera functions as it always has.

Wish I could say the same, dropped and broke my D7100 on a recent 11 day trip specifically for photography, when the ground beneath me collapsed. Glad I had my D7000 as a back-up to finish my trip but miss the D7100. Am going to upgrade to a D7200 rather than repair though. (it broke badly, will sell broke for parts)
I had the old 70-210 D lens attached, which is built like a tank, and it was unscathed
I guess that the shutter speeds are now a couple of stops off is OK though?!?!
Right??

So far I have been very lucky and have not dropped any of my Nikon equipment. I have a D-800 and a D700 and do not wish to see if they survive a fall.

2 stops is nothing that sensor can't handle!
Sorry to hear that. :-(
(I'm surprised there is not a removable cap on the bottom of the column to prevent that.)

To carry a camera in such a way is a bad, careless habit. Unfortunately some photographers never seem to learn from their mistakes. And this particular photographer seems to blame the Gitzo gear for the accident!

I know what you mean!!
I did it 5 times before it happened a 6th time!!
I can't afford a Gitzo, so I blamed it on my wife, as most things are her fault anyway!!!

Actually, he blames himself for failing to tighten the center column, but certainly the guy was careless. And as Longshadow observes, there should have been a stop on the bottom of the column.

SS, you ought to stick a Df on your tripod for protection, 'cause if it's happened 6 times, it's gonna happen a 7th!!
Should not drop the Df whether or not it will survive. The Df deserves tender loving care.
