I also have the D5100, and really never noticed how loud it sounds. Maybe I am just used to the camera.

I too have a D5100, and I have never had a problem with shutter or mirror noise.
BTW I like the confirmation the noise gives. It helps to be loud outdoors and in crowds.

I too like the confirmation, it's just that so far, it hasn't seemed to be too loud.

I think it's funny that most P&S cameras add a sound to let you know it took a picture.

I always shoot with Nikon & would never change due to all my Nikon lenses but I wonder why Nikon cameras are so much noisier when hitting the shutter release? I was taking photos today along with a bunch of other photographers & you could hardly hear their cameras when they hit the shutter release.I shoot with a Nikon D 7100 & a D 5100.I have tried the quiet button on the selector but it's not that quiet. Are the more expensive Nikon cameras as noisy as mine?
They D810 has new shutter technology and is very quiet but not completely silent.

I hear electric cars (pun intended) also have to make a car noise to prevent pedestrians from getting run over unannounced! :XD:

Mustang GT, Chevy Camaro, ,Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and a line up of BMWs and Jaguars to name some. Same ones back in the day.
I think the Hellcat is on top right now, as far as raw power.

If you are in a place where it really matters, just turn on live view. The mirror stays open, so no mirror slap.
I really dislike live view (only because it is my preference, I don't care what others do) but if I have to be quiet, I have no issue turning it on.
Great! My cameras were much quieter until it was brought to my attention, now they are really noisy :| . So, I guess I'll just have to get the D810 now :D
