I always shoot with Nikon & would never change due to all my Nikon lenses but I wonder why Nikon cameras are so much noisier when hitting the shutter release? I was taking photos today along with a bunch of other photographers & you could hardly hear their cameras when they hit the shutter release.I shoot with a Nikon D 7100 & a D 5100.I have tried the quiet button on the selector but it's not that quiet. Are the more expensive Nikon cameras as noisy as mine?

The Nikon Df is the quietest of all DSLRs.

Sell your Nikon and buy a Canon, after all, it's the noise that makes the picture, or is it lack thereof? (oops... being sarcastic :)

Never!

My Nikon has a quiet mode for such occasions, it is a D810 so not sure if other Nikons have it. My D300 does not appear to have this mode. Would be worth a check through the menu to have a little look.

D7100 and up on the newer versions have the quiet mode. I am not sure about the earler cameras... the control is on the same wheel as CL and CH.

My D800 is quite noisy, but my D810 is very quiet for a dslr.

The Nikon WD40 was supposed to be a Weatherproof Digital entry level camera, but it barely got into production. I think there was some sort of copyright dispute over the name. You must be referring to the Nikon D40, and that is a very quiet camera. Yes, I'm kidding. :D

The Nikon D600 was designed to produce its own WD40!!
I've heard it was quite stellar at it too!!

My Canon AE-1 was as loud as my Nikons are today. The mirror flips up and hits stops, thus the sound.

The d800 makes yours seem silent.

The D800 has a "Quiet Shutter Release" mode

It seems all camera models have different sound levels. I don't know Nikons to be particularly more noisy. I have a Pentax K-20 that has what I figure is a average level of noise, another person or say subject can hear it. My Pentax K-5 on the other hand is rather quiet and even I when using it on a tripod and standing a bit away can barely hear the mirror / shutter. Other Pentax owners with "lower" models even comment how quiet it is. That was not a buying point for me, it just happens to be that way.

Yes, how do, if that is the issue, Nikon DX compare with FX models in sound?

Some Nikons are quieter than others. My D80 has a quiet release mode that is quieter than my D610 and my friend's D7100 and D810. I was shooting with a guy that had a Df and it seemed to be a little noisier than my D610. I think that sometimes it is just a matter of perception. As for Live View Mode, it is quieter but you can't hold the camera steady enough.
