And I was just about to post three links for camera comparison sites. Oh, well. Which ever one you choose, it will take great pictures, and you'll love it. Let us know what you decide.

Well I purchased the 6D when it came out, outstanding camera, decided to give mirrorless a whirl with the Oly EM1 system, used it for a year, and went back to the 6D just a month ago, now I am happy again!
Hope this helped, the 6D is a great camera.

I sold my 5Dmark II for a 6D and never looked back. The ISO performance is fantastic!

I don't think you would be unhappy with either camera.

I feel the video is better from the 5D MK II when compared to the 6D.

Another consideration is the 5D MK II uses CF cards where the 6D uses SD cards.

I also feel the 5D MK II has a slight edge in the AF area.

I would choose the 5D MK II over the 6D in most cases. I would choose the 6D if you want a smaller lighter camera body, do a lot of extreme lowlight photography, or if the wireless function is important to you (Canon still has not gotten the software to be 100% reliable- many times I have to clear the wireless settings and start over).

I have the 6D and my only major regret is the AF, works great on stationary objects, only so so on moving objects. The 5DmII is about the same as the 6D and have older processor software.
It is not as bad as the old days of film and manual focus. But I don't want to go back to that. Even though a lot of great photographers got a lot of great images with manual focus back in the day.

Here is a comparasion of the two:

I feel exactly the same about my 6D. When I bought it I thought I wasn't really ever going to get into photographing moving subject so.....didn't care that the 6Ds AF is pretty limited. IQ and high ISO noise performance are impressive. I frequently make use of the WiFi and I'd miss it if I didn't have it.
Well....now I've taken a interest in birds and the 6D works but it would be nice to have more focus points.
I think if I were going to do it again.....I'd suck it up and go for the 5D III.

Check out Regis. He has both the 6D and now he just bought the 7D MarkII. He loved his 6D and took beautiful photos with it but since he started to use the 7D MarkII he likes this camera better and he is selling his 6D. Just go back a few days and you will see his remarks and his photos....Rich

I own a 6D and love it. It is always better to get the latest in technology as apposed to something used, if the budget permits. I think you would be happy with the 6D.

I don't know but if I could get a 1DX used for a good price I'd give up buying anything else!!! :) :) :)

OK you knowledgeable Hoggers. I'm adding to my arsenal a FF Canon, and would like to know your opinions which I would be better going with, the 5D MKII or the 6D. A used 5D MKII is about $1250. in mint condition with low shutter count and the 6D is comparable. These are within my budget, however, I would love to have the 5D MKIII but just can't swing it at this time.

Jake brake,
I decided this year to take advantage of Ritz Camera's Canon Promo which I seen on CPW (canonpricewatch.com). CPW said it's the same promo offered by B&H last year. Pkg was a USA 6D body + 32gb SD + Pixma Pro-10 ptr. After $499 promo discount, $350 mail-in rebate, and ptr sale of $305, I paid $950 for the body & card.
I have a 50D 6fps & the trusty EF70-200 f2.8 that served me well for my grandsons sports shooting. I wanted to upgrade primarily for lo lite stuff. I could not justify the 5Dxx price range for my use.

I don't think you can go wrong with either. If it were my choice, I'd buy something else entirely. But if you're committed to Canon, the 6D or 5D II is a good conundrum to have. I'd probably go with the 6D, since it is a newer design.

The dirty little secret is that MOST camera gear is really, really good these days. Canon, Nikon, Sony, Panasonic, Olympus, Fujifilm, Pentax, Samsung... All make gear that is really good at SOMETHING. The subtleties determine which is more appropriate for what purpose.

I was once a heavy Nikon user. When digital came along, I soon switched to Canons for their software, their ease of tethering, their ergonomics... and their more subtle, natural portrait color. When hybrid still/audio/video work came along, I switched to Panasonic. But I shoot about half stills, half video, so it makes sense for me to have one system do everything.

Whatever you do, realize that the market will change rapidly, so pick something you will feel comfortable using for five years or so.

There's a 5DII in the for-sale section with an excellent price that might help you decide ....

Robert, I agree, both have a crappy focus system.
But to that end, I have shot a ton of fast sports, BIF's and landscape in the last 5 years with my 5ll. I'll admit, my keeper rate is very low with action, but one just needs to compensate in very inventive ways and wring everything out of the camera to get shots.
But for landscape and portraits and easy action like panning and things that don't move at you it is not to bad.
The 5ll is definitely a higher end camera compared to the 6. Yes the 6 May be better in the dark but the 5ll has a few more custom functions, a few more mp and 1/8000 vs 1/4000 with a higher sych speed and 50k more actuations.
It's close to a toss-up but depends on the costs difference. ;-)

SS,

I agree with everything you say that a lot depends on the usage of the camera. If the OP is going to be doing a lot of low light shooting I would have to recommend the 6D, if not then the 5D is the way to go. Hopefully he's not going to be shooting a lot of action shots. If so then I got to recommend he tried to save his pennies and get the 5D3.

In 2005, we bought 230 Canon EOS 20D bodies and Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 zooms at Herff Jones Photography. We kept them for five years, and began replacing the 20Ds then with 50D bodies.

There's really no reason to always have to have the latest thing, other than a severe case of G.A.S.

I think it's more important to appreciate and use what you have well, than to lust after something you think will do a better job.

I had the 7D Mark II, and sold it and bought the 6D. The 7D was a beast... great build quality and super fast shutter. Lots of focus points. I've actually been very satisfied with the autofocus system on the 6D, but the biggest difference is full-frame vs. crop. 6D takes beautiful pictures and has excellent low-light quality. I've also had pretty good luck shooting the occasional sports event and birds in flight.
