OK you knowledgeable Hoggers. I'm adding to my arsenal a FF Canon, and would like to know your opinions which I would be better going with, the 5D MKII or the 6D. A used 5D MKII is about $1250. in mint condition with low shutter count and the 6D is comparable. These are within my budget, however, I would love to have the 5D MKIII but just can't swing it at this time.
I have read reviews, articles and video's until I'm blue in the face, so some advice please. Thanks.

If you can get the $300 rebate, I would get the 6d. If not, get the 5ll, it's a more professional camera, unless you are in love with the bells and whistles of the 6! ;-)

Thanks SS, I read many of your posts and you are very knowledgeable on Canon's so I shall indeed heed your advice. I'm leaning toward the 5D MKII used, but it's always nice to get a brand new one in the box. Like Christmas for this old buzzard!

I own a 6D and love it. It is always better to get the latest in technology as apposed to something used, if the budget permits. I think you would be happy with the 6D.

I have the 6D and my only major regret is the AF, works great on stationary objects, only so so on moving objects. The 5DmII is about the same as the 6D and have older processor software.
It is not as bad as the old days of film and manual focus. But I don't want to go back to that. Even though a lot of great photographers got a lot of great images with manual focus back in the day.
Here is a comparasion of the two:

Robert, I agree, both have a crappy focus system.
But to that end, I have shot a ton of fast sports, BIF's and landscape in the last 5 years with my 5ll. I'll admit, my keeper rate is very low with action, but one just needs to compensate in very inventive ways and wring everything out of the camera to get shots.
But for landscape and portraits and easy action like panning and things that don't move at you it is not to bad.
The 5ll is definitely a higher end camera compared to the 6. Yes the 6 May be better in the dark but the 5ll has a few more custom functions, a few more mp and 1/8000 vs 1/4000 with a higher sych speed and 50k more actuations.
It's close to a toss-up but depends on the costs difference. ;-)

I bought my 5dII new when the 6d first came out because the 6d didn't feel good in my hand and the controls on the 5dII were very close to controls on the 40d I was using at the time. I was very disappointed with the focus system coming from the 40d shooting bif I expected the 5dII to be better . I use the 5dII mostly for portraits and except for it limitation in high ISO is great. If it was me and I needed to shoot high ISO or action shots a lot I would find the extra money and get the 5dIII if I wasn't going to be shooting a lot of high ISO or action shots the 5dII would be great, but if I had to stay on budget and still shoot high ISO then I would get the 6d
I have been shooting the 5DII for three years and feel it is a solid camera with great ISO performance. It is not a moving target camera and neither is the 6D. The build is better than the 6D but not as fancy. Personally, I would look at the 5DIII if you can afford it.
6d but shop around, you nay get the 5 mark 3,with the new 5
coming out, i would pick the 6d over the 5d 11 myself
If you really want the Mark III why not wait until your finances say YES?

Whew, all good advice and thank you all. Now I'm really in a conundrum and thinking about waiting on my budget to allow me to get the 5D MKIII, after looking at the reviews and spec's. I could actually wait a while, as my 60D works very well for me. Hmm..decisions, decisions, decisions.
would go with the 6D with it's outstanding low-light work.

What kind of shooting do you do? What kind of usage does your equipment have to deal with? For stationary shots on up through panning shots I find that the 6D is excellent. The 5DII is more robustly built but that is not an issue for me as a hobbyist. I don't have any need to subject my 6D to harsh conditions. Just because it contains newer technology, such as an improved processor, for my shooting I would take the 6D over the 5DII everytime. Plus, it is better in low light/high ISO situations. The GPS can also be handy at times.
The 5DIII is, of course, superior to both models and the prices have been dropping. Once the 5DS becomes available there should be some good deals on the III, if your budget can stand the strain. Since you are already eyeing it, the possibility is strong that in 6 mo you will regret not buying it. Just for your personal satisfaction you may want to wait a while and see if your financial situation can cope with it. Most all of us have financial limits. Just don't let temptation take you in over your head so that you end up regretting it.
One more option you may want to consider is the 7DII. Much closer to your budget and deals are already popping up. The same crop sensor format you are currently using in a very robust body. Excellent camera although some have had autofocus issues. I sent my first one back to B&H for that reason. The replacement they sent me is fine. Unless you are determined to go full frame, the 7DII is definitely worth consideration. Can't beat it for action shots and it does fine for everything else. Better in low light then your 60D but not as good as the 6D.
Just bought the 6d with the 24 105 mm l lens. Terrific
camera
