Thinking about purchasing the new Nikon AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/4G ED VR. Is anybody familiar with this lens and if so what are the pros and cons. Reviews on this lens are pretty good.

I think you last sentence says it all. People who review photo equipment like this lens. It has a lot going for it at a lower price.
Thanks Jerry for the quick reply. Might pull the trigger today. Wanted the f/2.8 but my god its way out of my budget for sure.

Yeah, the price is a lot better, and F/4 lenses are getting more common.

great lens dont think there are any cons I have old version and its a great piece of glass
F4's and slower should become more common. Unless you truly want to shoot at lower f stops, modern cameras with greater and greater tolerance for higher ISO's, work very well. There is no reason for slower lenses to have worse optics other than light gathering ability than faster lenses.

Tamron 70-300 is a very good lens too. Unless you have already committed your money, you might wish to give it a look (the modern SP version). The extra 100 mm reach might come handy and does not add to the weight, usability or price (might actually be less expensive).

I bought this last year. Reviews were excellent but I was surprised just how sharp and what good color rendition it has. Keep it on a d7100. My 16-35 stays on the d800. At the present sale price it is a great buy. Just note it does not come with a tripod collar. I bought a RRS collar for mine. Good luck but I do not think you can go wrong with this lens.--Rich--also I really like the internal focus so that the lens does not extend.
Had this was a year or so, trust me it's a very very good lens.

I have that lens and really like it. It's easy to use handheld. I debated getting the f/2.8, but decided all that extra money for one more stop wasn't worth it. Especially since I mostly use it for shorebirds at the beach. Even shooting in shady swamp areas is fast enough. It's a great buy for the money.
After all of your positive comments which I really appreciate I pulled the trigger this afternoon and got myself the 70-200 f/4. Just unboxing it now (greatest feeling in the world to have a new lens). Will post some photos when I get a chance to get out and about. Want to thank all of you for helping me make my decision. Another reason to be part of the fraternity called HedgeHog. Thanks guys for all your comments.

Congratulations on your new lens. I'm sure you will be happy with it. Looking forward to seeing pics.

Hi,
Another advantage of the f4 is that there is no focus breathing , a big issue on the f2.8
