Hammer,
What is focus breathing? Never heard of it.

Thanks,
Mark

A not uncommon phenomenon occurring with some zoom lenses whereby the magnification at the chosen focal length varies dependent upon the focal distance. For example, if I zoom my 28-300 lens out to the 300mm focal length while focusing on my subject 3 feet away, the actual magnification is roughly equivalent to what I would see with a 140mm lens. If I focus on a distant (100 feet) subject, the magnification is equivalent to that of a 260mm lens.

Generally speaking, the further the distance to your subject, the closer the actual magnification is to that of the focal length shown on the lens.

The original Nikon tripod collar will set you back around $200+ but there are plenty third party collars out there for much less.I myself think the collar should come on this lens for a few more bucks on the price,$200+ is a bit steep!

I can't speak for this lens as I don't have one. The may have done you a favor as some Nikon collars are less than stellar. There is one from RRS for this lens that costs $ 234.00, is I remember correctly, which is probably much better than the Nikon version, judging from all the other RRS products that I do own. The absolutely "awful" collar I am referring to came on one of the 80-200s, as my memory serves. It was just plain a pain to work with.

Thinking about purchasing the new Nikon AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/4G ED VR. Is anybody familiar with this lens and if so what are the pros and cons. Reviews on this lens are pretty good.

Its very sharp except at 200mm but still not bad and probably better than most at this range.

Sold it and replaced it with the Nikon 28-300mm which I think is better at 200mm and much more versatile.
