Hi,
Another advantage of the f4 is that there is no focus breathing , a big issue on the f2.8
I wonder why camera manufacturers despite their mega-$ research budgets have either not focused on OR do not care about solving camera inner chamber dust mega problems? Most of the in-built sensor-cleaning mechanisms seem to be marginally effective at their best!
Have you looked into the Tamron 70-200 f2.8 ?
All reviews rave about it's excellence, some claiming it is the equal of the holy Nikon 70-200 f2.8 ! DxOmark lists it as the best zoom for the 36 MP Nikon D810. For only $1450, it would be my choice...
i wanted the same lens for such a long time but couldn't seem to save up enough for it...so i tried out the tamron lens and absolutely loved it..now i use it all the time...f2.8 70-200mm ..got it for almost half of what nikon is selling for with their rebate of $100...check it out..you will be surprised at the sharpness and quality of the photos..

Thinking about purchasing the new Nikon AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/4G ED VR. Is anybody familiar with this lens and if so what are the pros and cons. Reviews on this lens are pretty good.
David Busch, well known photographer and author, writes highly about this lens. I, like you, could not afford it's big brother, the 70-200mm f/2.8. Good luck with whatever you decide.

After all of your positive comments which I really appreciate I pulled the trigger this afternoon and got myself the 70-200 f/4. Just unboxing it now (greatest feeling in the world to have a new lens). Will post some photos when I get a chance to get out and about. Want to thank all of you for helping me make my decision. Another reason to be part of the fraternity called HedgeHog. Thanks guys for all your comments.
Congratulations - I think you will love it.

I Sekt he'd to all Nikon f4 lenses a year ago couldn't be happier, for outdoor landscape work. They are really light compared to the 2.8's. The back ground blurr is not as good as with the 2.8's
The loss of one f stop is easily made up for with ISO on today's cameras.
This past weekend, I shot a 4 day curling event, both on ice and evening parties. I put my 2.8!24 to 70 in the bag, and I used it for a little while Saturday night just because it was in the bag. Most of the weekend was shot with the f4 24 to 120 on a d610. I shot on ice with the 70 to 200
Enjoy the new lens when you get it
I have this lens for my D800. A very nice lens but to me a tad soft fully zoomed as I would expect from any mid-shelf zoom but at the price, compared to the 2.8, it is by far the one to get depending on your needs and use.

Thanks Jerry for the quick reply. Might pull the trigger today. Wanted the f/2.8 but my god its way out of my budget for sure.
Fricciardi, KEH has a used Nikon 70-200 f2.8 in excellent condition for $1272.00
Hammer,
What is focus breathing? Never heard of it.
Thanks,
Mark
You will be very pleased with the f4. Lightweight, super sharp, fast focus, great color. I am very pleased with mine, got used off ebay, US model.
I know everyone has opinions but when I had my Nikon D300 I used the 18-200mm lens. It was a dream. I rarely changed lenses because this one was so versatile. I got beautiful pictures with it every time. Might want to check that one out too.

You will be very happy with your new lens. Hopefully, you were offered the current sale price of $ 200 off. Although I do have the 2.8, as I mainly do sports, I am considering this lens due to its weight savings. Do get the RRS tripod collar. You will not be disappointed with that either. Pricier than some, but well worth it.
Get the Nikon 18-200. Great lens. Fast. Sharp. Macro capable. F3.5. VR

The original Nikon tripod collar will set you back around $200+ but there are plenty third party collars out there for much less.I myself think the collar should come on this lens for a few more bucks on the price,$200+ is a bit steep!
