The 17th and 18th OERM (located in Perris, Ca Riverside County) is having their steam weekend with Ventura County #2 Prairie type being the featured engine. It is also "Behind The Scenes" weekend, a once a year event where guests get a guided tour of areas normally off limits, in some cases areas most members can get to only by joining a work crew in a maintenance or restoration project.
Admission for nonmembers: ages 12 and up - $12, children 5 to 11 - $8, children 4 and under are free. Members get in free, so if you join you not only get this event but the museum newsletter and one year of access to everything but the annual Thomas event. $40 for individuals and $60 for a family (2 adults and their children under 18)
Go to the museum website by searching for oerm and click on the site to get all the information, directions etc.

Excellent! I may very well see you there. Which day is less crowded?

Hard to say, but usually Sundays. However having Steam Weekend and Behind the Scenes together could change it. I think I will move my lazy body and be there both days, one just as me and my camera and one working if they need me in operations.
Note for future, we had a Steampunk Carnival last year and may have it again this spring. That will be a good photo op because of all the costumes. In fact the steampunkers often come out with photo classes to be models a few times a year.
Jerry Perkins (OP) has given permission for me to post a few of my OERM photos.
Your photos of these magnificent machines are making me interested in them. Just to start my education what are steampunk's.
I bet he is using 50 SAE oil

Think 19th century steam powered industrial revolution technology carried far beyond where they actually got. The style and clothing usually is a take off of Victorian British Empire or US wild west.
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (movie), Wild Wild West (TV), The Golden Compass (movie) are examples although the term itself appeared about 1987 and a lot of Verne, Wells etc became part of the new genre. I seem to remember a Sherlock Holmes movie that incorporated steam punk.
There are many who make clothing, props etc. catering to the steampunkers. At least one guy will take your computer/laptop and for $$$$ will adapt it to look like it is steam powered.

We hope so. It has been very good in the past.

The TV series "Castle" had a Steampunk episode that really showcased the Steampunk look and philosophy.
Nice photos from both you and Nikonian. Thanks.
Hope to see you there.
Suggest to your people they browse the web site for hints and rules.
For instance if any of them intend/hope/dream of using photos or video commercially the city of Perris requires a permit, the book store has the info.
The book store will also have information on future events so you can get a longer lead time on any you might want to come out and shoot.
I think I've got it. Steam punk refers to a genre which influences style. I would never have known.
