Can you put up the two photos and perhaps we can have a play for you?

I was waiting for someone to say that. Members do that all the time. Post them here and let people give it a shot.

Not sure how to start with this, or even if the title is accurate. My (almost) 2yr old looks exactly like my wife when she was 2. So for my wife's birthday, my mother inlaw got a 10x12 picture of my wife when she was 2. I mean the resemblance is incredible. Anyway, I'd like to do something with the picture of my wife (at 2) and my daughter who is turning 2 in July. This is WAY beyond my beginner level, but I want to do something. (obviously I know anyone can take a picture of a picture) What I want a pro to capture is the...I guess the inoccent's (sp?) of my wife's picture at 2, and my daughter at 2.
I guess what I'm asking, is can this be done? Actually, I think I want advice on what I can do with a pic of my wife at 2 and a pic of my daughter at 2.
As always, all advice greatly appreciated!

I would recommend converting that photo of your wife to a digital file by using your camera on a copy stand with the camera set to a small aperture (f16-f22) in natural light. This I believe will give a better result than a scanner. Once you have the capture, you can use software to merge it with an image of your daughter. If your equipment allows multiple exposures, that may give you something to experiment with. I'm guessing that you don't have a copy stand, so maybe a hogger in your area that does can hook you up. (If you come to Florida, I'll be happy to assist).

This sound like a fun project with opportunities to learn. Good luck and share the results when you are done.

Other ideas for two photos are to put them side by side in similar frames, a diptych with two matte windows or make a collage of them in one frame.

Hire a freelance graphic designer for an hour or two to come up with something for you. He or she will have a high res scanner and will have the graphic capabilities to create what you want.

It would seem to me that the place to start would be to scan the photo of your wife, and then you would actually have it in a format where you could do some experimentation with both.

It is likely better to scan the photo. Be sure to clean the dust off the scanner and the photo. It works well.

If you do not have a scanner you can get it done at most places that print photos; e.g. Walgreens, I think.

Skiman,
I'm not sure that is what I want to do? I already have Picasa, (actually haven't installed it yet) I don't think I want to combine them, but show how similar they are. Please forgive me if I am not using the right terms. I have a large picture of my wife at 2. (I'm sure I'll have to size it down) I want to show a picture of my daughter, and my wife in the same frame, both at 2 yrs of age. To show how much they look alike.
Thanks,
Andy

Are you saying you just want a double frame. I was thinking you would combine them and then use two boarders (and maybe their names printed in the graphical frames) to set them apart in picasa so the result would still be an 8x10 with both images in it.

The easiest way to do this is copy your wife's picture so you have a copy of your own, if the picture was taken in a studio and marked as copyrighted commercial labs will not do it for you. Do you have a friend with a scanner and decent printer who can copy it for you? After you have a copy of your wife's picture either take one of your daughter or have someone do it for you and combine the two prints in one frame.

It is actually pretty simple. You can take the photo of the photo digitally or scan it if you have access to a scanner. Then take the photo of the current 2 year old, and put the 2 side by side in a montage and have your processor print it. Lightroom, Adoramapix, many processing ways to do this. Even Photoshop.

I uploaded an image of Generational Comparison and message to what I hope is the Topic, Is it Possible to Take a Picture of a Picture? I hope it comes up here.

This is the first time I have tried to put an image into my message here so I don't know if I did it correctly. If not, maybe it will be under that topic in a Pictures section of this Website.

I also hope I am understanding what you are trying to do.

Guess I was not successful at getting the image to show up here. I guess the image is in the picture gallery here:

Let me know if this is what you have in mind.

You can do this in Photoshop using masks and moving the ladies, each on a separate layer, into places that satisfy your artistic eye. Use smart objects for the layers so you can transform them to matching sizes.

Pg,
I appreciate your reply, but I think you missed the part where I am a newbie. :) My PP skills are auto correct in office 2010! However, I do believe (and I can't quote it cause I cut it out of the reply) is what I am trying to capture!

I assume your wife's picture is a print.. What I do if I have a print that I really want a good digital image from is have it commercially scanned to a cd or thumb drive. Then I can do what I like.

Good point, Staples, Office Max or any of the major office supplies can do that fairly inexpensively. As long as it isn't copyrighted.
