Not sure how to start with this, or even if the title is accurate. My (almost) 2yr old looks exactly like my wife when she was 2. So for my wife's birthday, my mother inlaw got a 10x12 picture of my wife when she was 2. I mean the resemblance is incredible. Anyway, I'd like to do something with the picture of my wife (at 2) and my daughter who is turning 2 in July. This is WAY beyond my beginner level, but I want to do something. (obviously I know anyone can take a picture of a picture) What I want a pro to capture is the...I guess the inoccent's (sp?) of my wife's picture at 2, and my daughter at 2.
I guess what I'm asking, is can this be done? Actually, I think I want advice on what I can do with a pic of my wife at 2 and a pic of my daughter at 2.
As always, all advice greatly appreciated!
Andy

I think you are asking for advice on how to merge the two photographs together (side by side with a common background?

Disregard this if you are asking something else.

Yes, you can take a picture of a picture but make sure the plane of the camera and the plane of the picture are aligned to avoid any distortion.
You might just find it easier to scan the picture and save it as a jpg.
As to what you can do with the final picture, only your imagination and your skill with post processing knows for sure.

What am I not getting?

As best you can, describe what you see the final outcome to look like.

Yes, you can do that. I did that with photos of my cousin and her Mother both at age eighteen, two generations. It is a composite with both young women in one image. I wanted to do a three generation image but, at the time, I did not have a scan of my Cousin's Mother's Mother ( my Grandmother) at age eighteen. I have it now so perhaps I will make that three generations of family women image one day.

You can do this in Photoshop using masks and moving the ladies, each on a separate layer, into places that satisfy your artistic eye. Use smart objects for the layers so you can transform them to matching sizes.

Good luck with your project.

Searcher,
Actually, I'm not sure what I want! :) I'm not sure I want to merge them together, but maybe have them looking at each other. Or side by side (in one picture) to show the uncanny resemblacne they share?
Thanks,
Andy

Pg,
I appreciate your reply, but I think you missed the part where I am a newbie. :) My PP skills are auto correct in office 2010! However, I do believe (and I can't quote it cause I cut it out of the reply) is what I am trying to capture!
I want my wife (at 2) and my daughter (who will be 2) in one picture.

SS,
Your not getting it, because I can't explain it correctly! :)
If you saw a picture of my wife at 2 and my daughter at 2, you would be hard pressed to tell them apart. (despite the age of the pictures and videos) That is what I want to show. I want to show there is hardly any difference. Does that make sense? (other than she get's her smarts from daddy) :)

Your post implies that you either do not have a scanner or that your scanner is not large enough to deal with 12x10.

Tack the photo to a wall, camera on tripod, try to use natural light and keep altering the exposure until it comes out right.

Once you have both photos digitalised, they can be manipulated in post processing software.

If you post them in the Post Processing section (details below) a lot of help will be given on varied themes. the guys and girls in that section have unending patience with a project like this.

MS Office is probably not the best software for this, let us see the images and work out what can be done using something easy and free.

Searcher,
I agree! Ok, give me a day or 2. I want to take a picture of the picture that my mother inlaw gave my wife for her B-day. Then, I'll post a picture of my daughter, but the pose my wife is in, and my daughter will be in will be a lot different. Maybe just a head shot? Let me post some pics (in the apporiate area) in a few days.
Thank You!!
Andy

Once you get both pictures in digital form (pic of pic) or scaned. Just put them in a software double frame or some other multi-image layout project. This can be done in Picasa (free). Just search youtube for "combine two images using picasa 3"

I am not sure about the tech side if it, but I wonder about composition.

This thought flows though my wondering brain: How about in the composition you have the pic your Mother-in-law gave you, a new born pic of your daughter. All this framed framed by your wife on one side and your daughter on the other.
