Thanks. I am using a 100mm Canon macro lens. All my photos (so far) have been taken in the field. The black background is a result of the flash. There are many different flash set-ups here on the forum, but I personally use the Canon ring flash.

Sorry, I've only used the ring flash for macro photography but I'm sure there are many people on this forum who can help you. I've only been doing macro for about 6 months.

By "open" if you mean out in the field, yes. Check out the link that Nikonian sent to see various macro set-ups.
