If it's a driving trip I usually take one bag with two bodies, the full suite of f/2.8 lenses plus a 24-300mm lens.

More and more, if it's a flying trip it's a Canon G12 (my wife's) and a Canon G15. I got tired of schlepping a big camera bag through airports.

I often finding myself packing every piece of gear and gadget I own when on a road trip for a couple of days. That makes for quite a lot of gear! I don't want to leave it in the car overnight, so I end up packing 5 or 6 bags into the hotel room, and back out in the morning. I need to consolidate a road pack to accommodate my needs. What do you guys pack for a 2-4 day trip?

Watch an Episode of Rick Steves on PBS for the clothing part. For the photo gear: think on your prior trips. What did you not use? Where are you going? I recently took a non-auto trip to Canada. I took one camera, one lense and the requisite extra battery, extra memory disc(s). Point is to also enjoy life beyond the viewfinder-- unless the sole reason is photography. Then hire a Sherpa and take it all.

In all honesty forget trying to get your wife to pack less. Don't fight battles you can't win. If in fact she packs less and as a result doesn't have her favorite whaterver 20 years later she will still blame you and she will pack even more on every trip you take. Trust me on this I have personal experience to back this up.
so you'ved taken trips with his wife before?lol

4 day trip = 1 pair of underwear

day 1-underwear front
day2-move front to back
day3-inside out front
day4-inside out to back

just like a clean pair every day.

saves space in your travel bag for other stuff.

I just got back from a 3 day road trip, 2 hotels, 2 photowalks. I took miniual clothes, meds & personal items. As for equipment, 1 camera, 50mm, 18-250, 10-20mm, and 100mm macro. I used the 50mm the first day and the 18-250 the second day. I also took 6 fully charged batteries and did not need to recharge any as I only used 3 batteries. I also took a tripod and did not use it. My point is twofold: even when we try to pack only what we need, we will always have more than we used. Then the second is take your most versitle lens (ie. 18-250) so you can get close and have some zoom because you do not know what shots you will want to take.

Gosh...that does not sound like a fun trip. That is work. I take a Lowepro expandable sling bag with one camera, 2 lenses, extra batteries, etc. Love that bag. Has room on outside for phone, maps, etc. Leaving for a week long trip on Thurs and will be trying to get my little sx50 in the same bag with my dslr. If it won't fit, then will be carrying that in another small bag. I usually take a tripod if driving. Othewise it stays home.
One lightweight nylon expandable bag for clothes, meds, and one pr extra shoes and my ipad....oh..and a small lightweight shoulder travel purse.
When sight seeing or shooting photos, just carry sling bag that holds my photo gear, phone, id, credit card and some cash, over my shoulder. Everything else stays in the car or hotel room. Did I mention I love my Lowepro sling? LOL

Not sure what type of gear you have. I try to limit my lenses to what I'm shooting. I'm currently shooting in Italy. My gear consist of two full frame bodies, 28mm-300mm, 16mm-35mm and 50mm. Everything in one camera bag. Oh yeah! Carbon fiber tripod with Really Right stuff ballhead. I hope that helps. Rob

Camera body, 3 spare batteries, car charger for batteries, 4 extra SD cards in 16g sizes, propack of Portra, Superia, Velvia, F3 or FG film body with 12mm, 35mm f2 and 50mm f1.2, 18-55 lenses, moleskin notebook for exif film data (old data entry method) Kindle Fire with digital portfolio, business cards with website/tumblr/contact info on it, tiny notebook for other folks contact info so i can email/network with em.

All of this fits in a Think Tank retrospect 10 with extra room for a 80-200mm 2.8 and SB600x2 with poverty wizards.

Jim, a small pack of Pampers is even better. You don't have to bring them back with you.

I don't need no stinking map! I can always find several people willing to tell me where to go!

I can carry all my camera gear in one bag. My still camera - Canon Powershot something-or-other - and 2 video camcorders; one is one of these things that look like a cylinder, and the other is a tiny little thing - the poor man's gopro!

I am hoping to reenter the world of the slr at some point soon, so I will probably need a bigger bag!
