Canon Lens Choice

Sony Fuji Polaroid and others are selling cameras with one fixed lens. Go back a bit and most cameras came with one fixed focal length lens. The world seemed to get along without too much pain.
Looking at the Ken Burns presentations that make use old photos makes me wonder what we have gained. Much of the photography makes me envious. What I see today doesn’t always do that.
Miesr van der Rohes comment “Less is more” becomes more meaningful with time.
I recently bought a Canon 5 D 11. While I enjoy all the possibilities it’s clear that we have yet to develop a nomenclature and interface that is intuitive. The camera industry needs a make over.
The questions do get a large response. I see little to be learned.
My answer is if I had one lens I would want a different one. We are not meant or designed to be happy with what we have. Every time I am in a restaurant and see the mater go by I think I should have ordered that.

I'll start. The EOS 24-105mm IS USM, which I just recently acquired is the best walk around lens I've found. It allows you to go wide and good for portraits and just general photography. The quality is fantastic. It's not for everything, but it serves the greater purpose.

I would think the camera body (crop or full frame) would play into this question. The 24-105 is great on a full frame...for a crop sensor Canon there is only one real choice and that's the 15-85 which covers the range of the 24-105 and adds a bit to the long end.

Ya! $13,000 plus $700 for a lens hood. Not a bad investment to take pictures of a few birds. I would rather invest the money on sex and booze and just use a Canon SX50.

Magic, I tried that. You get tired of the sex and the booze pretty fast, and the money's all gone. I'll admit, I got tired of the booze first......
But a great quality lens, ahhhhhhh, never !!!
Try it, you might like it. SS

I am also using the 24-105 mounted on a D60. Love it. Am waiting (and waiting and waiting) for CANON to introduce a CANON FF with an articulating monitor. That is my wish list!

Try an android (& probably apple) app to fire the shutter from your phone, don't know if you have live view on your Canon, but works well with 6D and 7D, you get the live view on your phone a really "articluated" screen +++

(24-105 and 16-35 on FF & APS-c)

Don't forget you guys over there get things cheaper. $16500 over here - lens hood comes in the case. After more than 30 trips to Bangkok (on business, of course) I'll stick to the lens thank you.

I own a Canon 7D and walk around with a 15 to 85mm EFS 3.5 to 5.6 IS USM lens. I am surprised no one else does. I find more use for the wide angle aspects than the long view. What is the thinking about this lens from you and my fellow UHH members?

I love it (see earlier post). Very sharp and have not seen any of the faults that some commentators noted in early reviews of this lens. On my crop sensor I get nice wide views, moderate tele and crisp images that lend themselves to manipulation.

If you mean the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM UD Autofocus Telephoto Zoom Lens, then I can highly recommend this lens based on my personal use of it since it came out. It has superb optical qualities. Its IS performs as expected.

You may wish to consider its variable maximum aperture range and its design inability to accept a tele-extender. Let me note that the aperture range and tele-extender issues have nothing to do with design and function performance.

This lens nears perfection in my experience with it in field use.

If you can do without f/2.8 and a tele-extender, this lens will replace the Canon EF 70-200mm line, while giving an added 100mm of reach.
If you mean the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM ... (show quote)

Thanks for the review of the Canon 70-300 etc. Well, since it does not accept a telextender, I'll forget this one. I tried the Canon100-400 4.5 L IS USM. Too heavy and I had a very awkard time trying to focus. I sent it back. I'll keep looking.

I've got a Canon T4i and chose to buy body-only with the Canon 15-85mm. Never regretted it....great walk-around lens. Combo of 18MP resolution and sharp lens gives me the luxury of tight cropping with very good results that makes a telephoto lens (short of Bazooka size) unnecessary.

Yep. The 15-85 lived on my Canons before I went FF. A truly great lens. I miss it.

I have that combination. The 15-85 lived on my 7D. I rarely used another lens. Vacations to Disneyland, Monterey/Carmel, San Francisco, Lake Tahoe, etc. it did it all. Sometimes needed my 70-300 at Lake Tahoe but all the other places I just carried my 7D with the 15-85 mounted.

If I could only have one lens it would be the Canon EF 28-300 f/3.5-5.6L IS USM. It's certainly not as good as some of the other lenses mentioned in this thread but it would cover all my needs. Wide enough for landscapes as well as city views and long enough to pull in farther away subjects both in the wilderness and the city. That plus decent IQ. Probably to heavy for a walk around lens though especially on a FF.

that's a silly question . but I was going to agree on the 24-105 if FFcamera
but then I thought the nikon 600mm is a once in a life time purchase for most
so iwould have to say the 600mm . I don't care how poor you are you can always get a cheap point an shoot for birthday party's
