This is for Canon users. If you could only have one lens what would it be and why?

I'll start. The EOS 24-105mm IS USM, which I just recently acquired is the best walk around lens I've found. It allows you to go wide and good for portraits and just general photography. The quality is fantastic. It's not for everything, but it serves the greater purpose.

Hmm

s we can all use more than one it is a mute point, no one would surely even consider the question.

However as a chat session

Sigma 50-500 then, that covers most things, shame it isn't Canon made lens

I'll stick with my EF600 II. Why? It was a great challenge to save up for it. It was a bigger challenge to spend so much money on a lens. It's bigger than yours. It can be used in self defence. When I'm broke I'll get a lot of money back. Finally, it is the ultimate birding lens IMO.

Thanks - it's all I could afford. I'm now broke, but at least I can see you scratching your butt from one mile away.
(Not that I want to - just saying).

I would choose my 70-200mm f2.8 just because it covers what I do most but I'd hate to be put in that position.

good choice Dave. I'm considering that for my next lens even though I have a 70-300. Does your's have IS?

The 70-200 L IS II USM would be my second choice. The choice of professionals. Fantastic IQ - highly recommended. No good for birding, but great for a city lens on full frame.

I agree with Dave as much of my shooting is of sports. I don't use IS as it doesn't really help as most of my shots are off of a monopod. My Canon 70-200 2.8 does it for me, but as others have said I would hate to have only one.
