Yup, definitely me. Now I'll think to myself, it would be better if the horizon, virtual or not, were leveled, but I won't state it.
I don't correct people's grammar or spelling either..... But I may say something about no punctuation al all. Mainly because it can't be read intelligently.
Even though they may benefit.

My philosophy: "If they want my opinion, they'll ask for it.".

Correcting grammar in a Photography Forum would normally be considered off topic and anal.
Discussing merits and improvements possible of a Photo in a Photo forum would seem...on topic.

My philosophy: Anything posted in a public forum is up for discussion.

Admin. philosophy: Doesn't need to conform to yours or mine.

Oh, I see that now in your signature line. Thanks!

What is so hard to understand about "Don't critique in the Gallery unless invited to do so"? .........🤔🤔🤔

That's what I do but someone suggest that they ask if they can make a suggestion. For me that's not good as it's kind of forcing the person to accept the suggestion. As I said, it's best not to say anything negative about pictures post in the gallery.

If I don't care for something, I keep my mouth shut.

So why you think asking to do a critique when you're not invited is a simple thing?

Imagine having to keep one's superior knowledge private

98% of the hog participants have superior photography skills than I have. I learn most when someone provides advice to anyone on how a photo could be improved. If everyone with superior knowledge kept it private, that would destroy the forum.

It just occurred to me that those who obsess about the issue, such as our OP, rarely - if ever - share photos. How about creating some teaching topics?!

I dunno, the OP, (Rick) supposedly complained about this 2 years ago. If true, 2 complaints in 2 years does not meet the definition of obsess? A lot of people complain about posters showering horrible photos with praise and accolades for no apparent reason.

Some people have to let loose of their two cents.
Better to ask first instead of just giving it.
Especially if not requested.

You say: My philosophy: Anything posted in a public forum is up for discussion.

You can philosophize all you want as long as you comply with Admin's Forum rules. Folks who don't want to follow the rules shouldn't be here.

"Rules? We don't need no stinkin' rules."

Enough already! Surely 20 pages of comments have done this subject to death. Respectfully folks, can we move onto something else now?

You can move on whenever you wish. Why should everyone move on just because you can't control your own fingers enough to...move on? NOONE is forcing you to participate in this topic.

Seriously. WHY are you still here reading/posting comments to a thread you think has been beaten to death?

Some complainers do so within the pages of other topics, but it's true that I don't know if there have been some who created wholly new topics of complaint every two years.

Regarding your observation, "If everyone with superior knowledge kept it private, that would destroy the forum..." Photo Gallery is not the appropriate section of UHH to offer unsolicited advice. Period.

Those with superior knowledge and experience should consider creating teaching topics. Years ago, we would see a few now and then. I remember one series in main discussion on composition (and critique thereof).

For Your Consideration did quite a few. In 2017, there were five or six of us who collaborated on a 4-part series about light.

Post Processing Forum used to have weekly challenges designed to test your pp skills, with a "judge" who knew a great deal about pp!

That rule is simple to understand. The OP (Rick) was more questioning gushing over an obviously horrible photo. However, the topic evolved somewhat into doing anything other than praising a photo posted in the Gallery. My personal opinion is if you can't handle C&C when you post a photo in a public forum, you should refrain from posting in a public forum. The question isn't understanding the LAW, but everyone doesn't always have to agree with the basis for the LAW. I try to abide by this LAW that I don't particularly agree with but I don't really pay enough attention to what specific forum I'm in when I reply. I always read from "Newest Topics" and that covers all the forums. Fortunately, I rarely give advice on photography techniques as even after 50 years of taking pictures, most here know more than I do, so I tend to keep my mouth shut. Editing I'm more adept and knowledgeable about although there too I'm not all that, but give advice if I think I can help.

I think most people on the hog enjoy sharing both their photo's and their knowledge.
Stifling that seems amiss.

For those who want a treat, look at Rick's images. The care with which he shoots is admirable. I've learned more by looking at thousands of pictures than I ever have by reading books about photography.

Wouldn't it have been awesome if he had created teaching topics to share his process and advice?
