I am of the "don't say anything if you can't say something nice" crowd, especially when the photo is posted in a section that isn't open to criticism. On the other hand, if I don't think the photo(s) are especially nice, I just move on without leaving a comment.

Not long ago I posted some photos of a woodpecker in our backyard, and one comment was to the effect that some of them looked a little soft. I don't mind that criticism, I shot through the kitchen window, so yeah.

I agree with you, with a few necessary comments to explain.

I will not disparage anyone posting photos here. I think there is a wide range of talent and technical abilities within this group, from beginner to expert.

I use this forum widely for several reasons and use it judiciously for others. I seek technical expertise from those who have knowledge that I lack, and I try to contribute knowledge I have for those seeking assistance. I have found some fantastically generous and knowledgeable people here who have truly helped me for which I am grateful.

I am in the group of people who don’t say anything unless it’s nice. I don’t appreciate nasty comments from snarky, grumpy folks. I will occasionally leave constructive comments and suggestions, only when specifically asked to by the OP. While I do like to encourage people who do post images, I will not leave a comment if I do not feel the image warrants positive feedback as that reduces the value of my commentary.

While I do look at the UHH galleries, I do not typically use them for inspiration as many of the posted images fail to qualify under my personal definition of quality images that have either technical or artistic merit.

I am personally striving to be a better photographer in both the technical and artistic fronts. I have and continue to become more educated in the world of fine art photography. I do converse with others and have found other people and forums besides UHH for better, different, or more qualified feedback on the artistic merits of photography.

Having said the above, I do very much enjoy this forum and am here daily. I do learn from others and hope that I contribute to it in meaningful ways. I only post images that I feel represent a quality of image that demonstrates a technical skill, unusual subject material, thought or emotion provoking, or showing some artistic merit, which can be subjective.

I certainly do not want to quash enthusiasm by anyone who participates in this forum, I encourage people to participate, and I encourage people to be thoughtful about what they post, why they post it and what their expectations are in return from the community.

I think this is a good subject and post.

There is a far cry from those offering free help and nasty comments from snarky grumpy folks.

My experience is when I'm offered suggestions they have never been nasty, snarky or containing disparaging remarks. The very rare exceptions occur when in a spirited discussion over some issue and some clown goes through your archives looking for a photo specifically to "disparage." There are very very few UHH'ers that simply trash a photo. If someone says nice pic but a little dark to me... well that's hardly disparaging.

I've been advised numerous times when my horizons were crooked and I NEVER asked. Just this one thing has helped me pay more attention to horizons, both when editing and taking a photo.

I'll be dammed if I'd remotely consider chastising a fellow hog for taking time to provide free suggestions/help/critique. Further, I can't see how anyone could get mad about that? Even further, it's EXTREMLY rare for someone to get nasty and gripe when offered free, unsolicited critique, even in the gallery. It happens, but is so rare it's insignificant.

Folks - I raised this subject a few years back and thought I’d give it an encore. UHH has 2 sections for members to post pics - Photo Gallery and Photo Analysis and posting constructive criticism in the first is frowned upon. I think this rule does a disservice to photographers looking to up their game.

I often look at posts in the Gallery and too often see, sorry for the blunt language, just awful photos. I’m not talking about subjective matters. I’m talking about pics that are out of focus, poorly exposed, with wildly tilted horizons (not done intentionally for artistic purposes), badly post processed or overprocessed, poorly composed with telephone poles growing out of heads, etc. or any number of other technical (NOT subjective) flaws.

And most times, well meaning members post, “Great set”, or “Nicely done” or other “ attaboys” in an attempt to not hurt another member’s feelings. I see this as counterproductive and reinforcing bad technique by poster. I ask how is a member to develop better photography skills if, I again apologize upfront, technically terrible pics are displayed and followed by lots of gushing platitudes?

Last time I mentioned this, I was slapped down by numerous members who argue that unless a poster requests constructive criticism, nothing negative should be said. Ok - I’ll buy the “If you have nothing nice to say, say nothing” idea, but gushing over bad stuff does harm to the poster too. If the pics are bad, say nothing. Stop reinforcing bad work.

Just a suggestion to those posting to the Gallery in the future - think about soliciting criticisms so you can improve your work. Sure you will get many nasty, snarky and often incorrect replies from a certain subsection of members, but you will also get many great suggestions for improvement offered in a polite, constructive manner. I’ve been a photographer for 55 yrs and I welcome all well meaning and civil critiques. We are never too old to learn a new trick.

Anxious to see the replies to this rant.

Chief, anyone who has been on this site for any length of time knows that Jerry is the Chief Posting Officer. I hope you're having a great day.

I should have been more clear on my post. I was not referring to nasty critiques at all. I was referring to the sniping by some, to people who ask sincere questions about equipment, techniques, how to’s etc. not about image critiques. That is all.
