Should cost about $1k to get a hot water heater installed unless there is extensive travel & shipping cost involved.

$1k would cover labor, but I doubt they provide low prices for parts.

I replaced my well pressure tank, along with all the pipes and fittings, for about $800. I hate to think how much a plumber would have charged.

is it possible that they made a mistake when quoting the price. Hlere in Maryland had a water heater replaced 2 years ago cost of the water heater $1000 price of labor and old heater disposal another $300.
Call them back or check around.

No mistake. JSP is known for their ridiculous pricing. I don't know why people pay. Too many dollars and too little sense?

I retired as a partner in a mechanical contracting business with union plumbers, pipefitters, fire sprinkler fitters, and sheet metal workers.

New York City residential plumbing rates should be in the $110 to 130 dollar per hour range for service and repairs. Commercial plumbing rates should be in the $150 to 170 dollar per hour range for service and repairs. The problem may be getting one when you need them and this does not include after-hours or weekend work. Expect to pay double time for both residential and commercial.

The plumbing industry is HIGHLY regulated and the unions have massive influence over the City Administrators and the Contractors. The "Union Rules" may require a two-man crew for the work being performed which doubles the price of labor.

Skilled plumbers and the Plumbing Codes help protect the health and safety of the community. One misapplied repair can devastate an entire municipal potable water network resulting in illness and death. This is no joke. A poorly installed water heater is a bomb and many a home has been destroyed by improper installation.

The next time you drink a glass of water from the tap in your home and you live another day, thank a qualified plumber.

I am a part time "Do It Yourselfer" but I know when a job needs professional attention. We have a plumber who is a MASTER Plumber. He not only does a neat and thorough job, but sticks around afterwards to be sure it is working correctly. His skills at fixing one thing have clearly avoided creating a secondary problem (which I have done and thus learned a lesson). Peace of mind is also worth something!

I can rewire a lamp, but I will never play with the power panel. You have to know your own limits.

I can take some macro photographs, but not at all like Sippy! I know my limits.

Funny you should mention that. I've been thinking about replacing my electrical panel. It's sixty years old, and it uses push-button breakers that are no longer available. I connected a separate/connected panel for the generator, so I have some experience. Still, there's a lot of electricity in there. It would be nice if I could shut off the power to the panel. I'm sure the power company could do that for me, but there would be a hefty charge, and they wouldn't like me doing it myself.

Hi! Out near Stone Ridge and our hot water tank has a leak. Called JSP and they want $1000.00 an hour for labor 😮 That seems a bit high 🤔

The last I heard, JSP was charging $800/hr. I guess that wasn't enough. I always see their trucks on the road, so they must be doing very well. Fortunately, there are local plumbers who are reasonable, with some charging by the job, rather than by the hour. This is why I like doing the work myself.

We recently replaced our water heater, not because of a leak, but because it was 15 years old and we didn't want a leak. It was a good thing we did because when we saw the bottom side of the old tank, it was solid rust. The tank was sitting on several bricks, not flush with the cement floor, it was just about rusted out! We have a handyman who works for a municipal water works company and does moonlighting. He only asked for 80.00 to install the new tank but we gave him 100.00. It took him about 45 minutes. We had the old tank drained and the new tank unboxed and alongside the old heater so he had only to make the connections. I could have done this myself but when you can get an expert to do the work at a reasonable price, it is probably a better way to go.

There are a lot of people who do moonlighting and can be located with a little networking.

Very smart. I've read that 10 - 15 years is about what you can expect from them.

Years ago, I read an article in a car magazine that recommended replacing car parts before they failed. Why wait for a breakdown and tow when you're traveling? It gave a list of parts and how often they should be replaced. It was an interesting article, but I never took its advice.

I had the power utility shut off power so I could replace the main panel
They did not charge for the service. But that was some time ago.

Hi,

Does your electrical panel box use Pushmatic breakers? You can get them "new" old stock or used on eBay.

And even if not, I'll bet you can get it from eBay or by doing an internet search.

We were told with a new commercial HE tank and installation, we were looking at 3500. 1000 an hour is better than most attorneys make. The hell with college. My daughter has been in pest control for 7 years now and between her production pay and commissions for her sales, she is making 2k a week.

Wow!
We live in California, where union labor rates could make a working family cry….but the professional plumbers here in SoCal are at a $135 @ hr rate. (And, I thought that was high?) If your local union shops are charging $1,000 per hour….I’d send my kids to school to gain the trades in your town!
Sounds crazy!!’n

As long as there is a hardware store open, I like to (do-it-myself) idea. Yet, when copper pipes break or the only way to clear a drain is RotoRooter, then I call a professional plumber.

I can still install a new water heater, but a new gas water heater still costs $800 at Lowe’s hardware. Ouch!
Good luck with you’s!
