Hi! Out near Stone Ridge and our hot water tank has a leak. Called JSP and they want $1000.00 an hour for labor ๐Ÿ˜ฎ That seems a bit high ๐Ÿค”

The last I heard, JSP was charging $800/hr. I guess that wasn't enough. I always see their trucks on the road, so they must be doing very well. Fortunately, there are local plumbers who are reasonable, with some charging by the job, rather than by the hour. This is why I like doing the work myself.

When someone has more work than they can handle, asking for excessive compensation is a way to keep the job flow manageable.

I don't know. Here in Texas there is a company called Cathedral Plumbing of Texas LLC and they have fancy decals on their very nice vehicles including Porsche 911 and Audi R8, Mercedes Bens S550. I would be afraid to call them if I need plumbing work done.

I retired as a partner in a mechanical contracting business with union plumbers, pipefitters, fire sprinkler fitters, and sheet metal workers.

New York City residential plumbing rates should be in the $110 to 130 dollar per hour range for service and repairs. Commercial plumbing rates should be in the $150 to 170 dollar per hour range for service and repairs. The problem may be getting one when you need them and this does not include after-hours or weekend work. Expect to pay double time for both residential and commercial.

The plumbing industry is HIGHLY regulated and the unions have massive influence over the City Administrators and the Contractors. The "Union Rules" may require a two-man crew for the work being performed which doubles the price of labor.

Skilled plumbers and the Plumbing Codes help protect the health and safety of the community. One misapplied repair can devastate an entire municipal potable water network resulting in illness and death. This is no joke. A poorly installed water heater is a bomb and many a home has been destroyed by improper installation.

The next time you drink a glass of water from the tap in your home and you live another day, thank a qualified plumber.

I learned how to fix plumbing and electrical from my father. May he Rest In Peace. When something breaks or just doesnโ€™t work right my wife fills out a work order and includes what time the job is to be completed and the payment for service rendered. Just kidding!
Iโ€™ll fix items around the house when necessary. I rarely call a plumber or electrician simply because I would not wish to pay that kind of money.

Yes I thanked my recent plumber very much. During a cold snap and blizzard here in Iowa, our water line froze. It was a Sunday. The plumber came and fixed it. He was here for 4 hours. It was $1500 parts and labor. We live in a mobile home court. Ours was the second home on our block he fixed that day. They temps outside were below zero. He would not accept a tip.

So, I heard about the Doctor that need the services of a plumber. Plumber came and did the job and handed the doctor the bill.
Doctor: "I'm a Doctor and I don't make that much for 15 min. work."
Plumber: "I didn't either when I was a Doctor."

That surprised me many years ago when I had some work done. The labor charge was doubled because they sent two guys to do the work. Imagine if they sent half a dozen guys!

Should cost about $1k to get a hot water heater installed unless there is extensive travel & shipping cost involved.
