I've had several mistakes made by B of A on my checking accounts.

I was the overseer of my Dad's B of A accounts for years, and they (4 times), made deposits and
withdrawals from my account and, likewise, deducting money from my father's account, instead of
my own. Sometimes the mistakes were not found until the "monthly" bank statements came in the mail.
The fact that our first and last names were the same, should not have made a huge difference.
Our bank accounting number were not the same, and we were 20 years apart in age.

The mistakes were (clearly) human errors by the bank tellers, and we realized that we are all human.
My father never knew of the errors, so he didn't think anyone was trying to sneak off with his money.

So, if you have new sons (or daughters), that you want to name after yourself, "Don't do it".
I'm sure that we were not the first people to have such a problem with I.D. in banking.

(Always check and recheck, your account numbers on deposit and withdrawal slips.)
Life can be interesting......

Same name problems are a problem. Imagine the chagrin of my namesake, when he received the notice his drivers license was being suspended. Fortunately I was 2500 miles away in the military. I know he would have had a few thoughts on the issue if we’d been face to face. RIP dad, we miss you every day.

Very good advice. I've gone through life with two first names: my father's name, given to me at birth, and my middle name, used all my life as my first name. Extremely confusing. I've also had several bank confusions.

My wife opened a Wells Fargo credit card to pay 0 interest on a 4 year schedule for an HVAC R/R. If we default, the accumulated interest is close to 30% pa on the whole balance. I can't pay early, I can't pay late and I can't pay it off ahead of schedule. They're just hoping I make one mistake.

I don't think that that is legal in that you should be able to pay off the balance at any time without penalty.

When I deposited my checks into the ATM I didn't get a receipt. So there was something defective with the ATM, and the checks were not credited. But I knew they were in the machine, and would be found when they opened the ATM. But they told me it wasn't that simple. Why not?

Sounds like a very unusual situation.

I opened the first two accounts at the local branch. The bank in town happened to be managed by the brother of a guy I went to high school with. He said he guaranteed he would open a free account for me. If it wasn't free, I was to go back, and he would make it right. By the time I was charged a fee, he had been transferred. So, I guess it took me four tries to get a free checking account.

Another negative situation - When my son was in college, B-of-A offered him a CC. He didn't use it much, but there was generally a small balance. Actually, I used it more than he did. That prompted me to have the card in my name rather than his. I called the bank, and they said, "Sure. No problem. Just submit your info, and we'll switch it to your name." I did that, and they added my name to the account, but they kept my son as the prime account holder. They said they didn't want to make the change. We canceled it.

The bank should have told him that.

As I have leaned with IRS agents, not every person you talk to knows everything.

I do not do business with any of the mega-banks for the reasons stated above. There are five; you can figure their names. Best to put your faith in the community banks.

Years ago I opened a B of A account to cash my pay checks. It was free with a $15 minimum balance (that tells you how long ago this was). I kept the $15 dollars in it. Later, they instituted something like a $5 fee for "maintaining" a checking account. Once they had depleted the account they closed it. I won't bank with them ever again.

Similar incident. Also year ago I bought some American Express travelers checks when traveling to New York. I went in to an American Express bank to cash them, and they wouldn't...without a bunch of WTH from me.

Yeah, I remember those days, too, when it wasn't free to have a checking account. It DOES cost the bank money, you know, to run those checks through and send them back to you (which they used to do). We have enough in savings at this point that our checking and savings accounts are free.

Bank of America is awful. A few years ago, I was working for a woman who always paid me with a B-of-A check. It got to the point where the bank wanted me to open an account to cash the checks. I opted for the free checking account. It wasn't free, so I canceled and opened up another free account. That wasn't free, so I canceled and opened another free account. At some point, I had a free checking account, but I had also paid several months of fees.

Last month, I accepted a B-of-A offer of a credit card with no interest till 2015, so I figured I'd give it a try. So far, they haven't charge me interest, but I don't trust them. Last week, I got another offer. If I make four purchases with the card - any kid of purchase - within a month, I'll get $20 credit on my account. I don't believe that, but I've made three purchases so far. Just like the free checking, I know there is a way they can avoid paying me the $20. I'll keep you informed.

I had a similar problem. The last company I worked for paid in a check drawn on US bank. Each time I would go to US bank to cash the check. They would ask if I had an account with them which I did not. Each time they tried to charge me a fee for cashing a US bank check. Each time I asked if there wasn't enough funds in the account and each time they would say there was enough funds. There wasn't a time they actually got any fee from me. I would raise hell to where they would always say "OK just this one time". Wrong. I refused to pay a fee to cash a check drawn on their bank.

A thread about B of A and a reply about Wells Fargo pops up.

What's an "American Express Bank"?

We've had B of A accounts since my wife was in college, many many years ago. We have 3 different credit cards and 3 accts with them. So far no problems. They have charged us late fees a couple of times. We called up customer service and the fees were removed.

I am surprised that people are getting actual checks from their companies. We've had direct deposit almost since the day I started working full time.

I have accounts with Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Chase, Capital One and CitiBank. I have no problem with any of them.
