I'm Testing Bank of America

Bank of America is awful. A few years ago, I was working for a woman who always paid me with a B-of-A check. It got to the point where the bank wanted me to open an account to cash the checks. I opted for the free checking account. It wasn't free, so I canceled and opened up another free account. That wasn't free, so I canceled and opened another free account. At some point, I had a free checking account, but I had also paid several months of fees.

Last month, I accepted a B-of-A offer of a credit card with no interest till 2015, so I figured I'd give it a try. So far, they haven't charge me interest, but I don't trust them. Last week, I got another offer. If I make four purchases with the card - any kid of purchase - within a month, I'll get $20 credit on my account. I don't believe that, but I've made three purchases so far. Just like the free checking, I know there is a way they can avoid paying me the $20. I'll keep you informed.

I have accounts with Bank of America for many years. I don't have any fee nor have any problem with them. They just paid very low interest on my saving account but that's all.
They gave me free check as well as free cashier check when I need it. They also do public notary for me free. I have 3 accounts with them plus a credit card. I can cancel a check without fee too.

MANY, many years ago I sent in a card payment, WAY in advance of the due date.
It sat there, and they posted it after the due date......
Late payment fee.....

I closed the card account and moved checking and savings accounts to another bank.
I won't have anything to do with them now.

I opened the first two accounts at the local branch. The bank in town happened to be managed by the brother of a guy I went to high school with. He said he guaranteed he would open a free account for me. If it wasn't free, I was to go back, and he would make it right. By the time I was charged a fee, he had been transferred. So, I guess it took me four tries to get a free checking account.

Another negative situation - When my son was in college, B-of-A offered him a CC. He didn't use it much, but there was generally a small balance. Actually, I used it more than he did. That prompted me to have the card in my name rather than his. I called the bank, and they said, "Sure. No problem. Just submit your info, and we'll switch it to your name." I did that, and they added my name to the account, but they kept my son as the prime account holder. They said they didn't want to make the change. We canceled it.

A similar thing happened with our original card.

A shipmate reenlisted and got a cash bonus - he deposited it in his BoA checking account, got his deposit slip from the bank teller and went his merry way - wrote some checks to pay bills and purchase some stuff - got his monthly statement showing insufficient funds and overdraft charges - he went to BoA and showed them the depost slip - they told him it was a fake and they would not honor it - made a comment about military people always trying to rip them off. He brought in his family lawyer and they had a chat with the president (BoA in San Francisco). The teller and manager were fired and were brought up on grand larceny charges (and subsequently convicted). He closed his account and his family threatened to close all of their accounts if they heard of any mistreatment of military members again. His family still owns an audio equipment manufacturing company that is worth millions... Although the president straightened everything out, it left a bad taste in his mouth and he does not have anything good to say about the the bank.

My youngest son got a BofA account when he was in High School, not long after he opened his account his social security number was stolen. When he found out he tried to close the account and he was told he couldn't close the account, the reason given was he was not the account holder. Went to social security to get a new number and was told he couldn't get a new number because he already had one even if it had been stolen, they could only reissue his card. We tracked down the individual who was using it and told the local police department and they said there was nothing they could do about it.

My wife was also on an account with him and when she tried to get her name removed from the account it was hell. She and my son had to go in numerous times to prove her identity after sending numerous emails to get her taken off the account. It took about six months to get off the account. It finally happened. Never again.

"Bank of America is awful."

With all the banks available to you, why do you continue to use Bank of America? I use a small local bank for my checking and mortgage. It's friendly, reliable and convenient. Actually, the only time I visit it is to replenish cash or use my safety deposit box

I used to have a B of A CC but I closed my account after it was revealed they were anti-gun and were not going to deal with any firearms purchases or do loans with manufacturers.

My wife opened a Wells Fargo credit card to pay 0 interest on a 4 year schedule for an HVAC R/R. If we default, the accumulated interest is close to 30% pa on the whole balance. I can't pay early, I can't pay late and I can't pay it off ahead of schedule. They're just hoping I make one mistake.

They're not paying you the $20. Their clients are, in the form of charges for handling transactions. Anything which increases the use of their cards increases their profit. And the one-time incentive will, perhaps, get you to using the card more, again increasing their profit. Of course, if you happen to screw up and forget to pay a bill on time they will happily collect the usurious fee for your mishap. I don't mind the way they operate, since I haven't paid for an airline flight in years because of free miles earned. I just make sure to pay the statement when or before due to avoid any interest.

I have never had an issue with BofA. The closest I came, was when they called me, asking if I had paid for a pizza in L.A. I live in Arkansas, and hadn't been to California in years at that time. They 'ate' the fraudulent charge, and zero issue for me... except I got a new card/number.
