I'm Testing Bank of America

I've been with BOA forever. No, they will NOT notarize anything for me. The other bad experience. About 20 years ago, I was buying a car for cash. I went to BOA and transferred money from an expired CD to checking account and asked the teller how long before I could write a check on that account. She said "immediately" bec the funds were coming to my checking account from another BOA account so no problem. So, I then went to car dealership next day, wrote a check and the following day, they called to advise it bounced. I called BOA's mother ship (home office 1-800 #) and they said the info from the local bank was wrong and you do have to wait a few days for the transfer to "clear". Really? Wow, the kind of stuff you never forget. Yes, two days later, the checked cleared.

Bank of America is awful. A few years ago, I was working for a woman who always paid me with a B-of-A check. It got to the point where the bank wanted me to open an account to cash the checks. I opted for the free checking account. It wasn't free, so I canceled and opened up another free account. That wasn't free, so I canceled and opened another free account. At some point, I had a free checking account, but I had also paid several months of fees.

Last month, I accepted a B-of-A offer of a credit card with no interest till 2015, so I figured I'd give it a try. So far, they haven't charge me interest, but I don't trust them. Last week, I got another offer. If I make four purchases with the card - any kid of purchase - within a month, I'll get $20 credit on my account. I don't believe that, but I've made three purchases so far. Just like the free checking, I know there is a way they can avoid paying me the $20. I'll keep you informed.

If you qualify for any sort of credit union, join and move your accounts. You’ll never use banks again unless they have a unique service that you need. HUGE improvement in service, rates, honesty…

Depends. I have no problem with Bank of America but the one that gave me a lot of problem was the Credit Union of Texas.

[sigh] I guess there is an Esso bee in every group.

I sat on the board of a credit union for a few years, and on the Supervisory Committee of the same CU for over a decade. I'm still a member there, and at another credit union. I have had nothing but good service from both of them. My last used car loan had a 1.99% interest rate on it! My credit card still has an 8.99% rate on it, so it is the only one I ever carry a balance on for a few months. Credit Unions are only entitled to less than 1% profit, to keep them solvent. So the spread between loan rates and savings rates is comparatively low.

I've never had a BoA acount. Pretty much I've stayed with local or more centralized to one area banks. I have been a member of a Federal Credit Union located on a miitary base for around 40 years and cannot say anything bad about it. I have seriously considered moving all of my accounts there because they pay much better interest and are much easier to deal with than any bank I've ever used.

My Grandfather told me that "B of A" had changed their name from Bank of Italy to Bank of America, makes you wonder why? Said that's why he would never bank with them.

That's odd, because there were times I wrote BOA checks on my to my landscaper who did not have a BOA account. He was able to cash the check at a BOA branch with no problem. We've had BOA accounts for decades. We're able to move money between accounts online, pay vendors online, and all our bills are paid through automatic payment. I've always had good customer service as well. I can't understand your experience and fears.

Years ago when I had a photography business, I banked with B of A. One day I went to deposit about 10 checks in their ATM. The machine took the checks, but I didn't get a receipt. I always made a list of checks for a deposit, who they were from and the amounts. So they gave me temporary access to the money, but they said it would take up to four weeks to confirm the deposit. I told them that as soon as someone opened the ATM they would find the checks and then they could confirm the deposit. They told me it wasn't that simple. I thought it should be that simple, but it did take about three weeks. So when a Chase representative came to my office and solicited my business and offered a bonus I took it, and I had good service with them ever since, and I still have my personal accounts there.

I moved to New England in 1982. Got an account at a Boston bank. Worked just fine.
Bank #1 got bought by another bank. Worked just fine.
Bank #2 got bought by another bank. Worked just fine.
Bank #3 got bought by BofA. Then the fees started.

After a few months I switched to another bank. Everything worked just fine.
Bank #4 started in with the fees. Switched to a credit union
The credit union worked just fine for several years until I moved out of state and they didn't service CT.
Bank #5 worked just fine, but then they closed their local branch.
Bank #6 has been working just fine for the last 3 years. Moved back to MA.
When bank #6 starts acting up I'll look into the credit union again. The one I had before was friendly and helpful but it doesn't have a branch local to where I am now.

When we sold the house in CT we looked for a place to park some money. BofA had a local branch so we looked. They did not appeal to us. Other banks had significantly better interest rates on CDs and other parking places. We wound up with a couple different internet banks. We had to use more than one to stay under the FICA insurance limit.

The only thing good I can say about the first 3 banks is that my account number stayed the same across all 3 banks. Completely inconsequential.

He must have meant the old Bank America. Bank OF America was formed as a merger of Bank America with NationsBank, formerly North Carolina National Bank. The old NCNB management wound up in charge and the Bank America staff wound up looking for employment elsewhere. Never underestimate the prowess and treachery of old redneck bank presidents... They'll eat your lunch and laugh at you.

I doubt it.
Mine was Bank OF America:
We had Pan American Bank-> NCNB-> Nations Bank-> Bank of America

"Bank of America, one of the largest banking and financial services brands and corporations in the United States. It was formed through NationsBank's acquisition of BankAmerica in 1998."
My nasty experience was with Bank OF America.

Okay, but what did that have to do with Italy? I was commenting on gastech1949's post.

You had a business and didn't make your own copy of the checks before putting them in the ATM or at least make a record of each person's payment? Sorry, John. You shouldn't be blaming BOA.

I was saying that it may not have anything to do with Bank America.
My bank's change to Bank OF America was before 2000? He didn't state a time frame.
That's speculation on your part.

Nations Bank bought Bank America in 1998.
"In 1998, NationsBank acquired BankAmerica, and modified that better-known name to become Bank of America."
