I always keep cards loaded and ready to go in my cameras, plus I carry a card pouch with additional cards (cards can fail and I can use them up on a long shoot) . The last thing I need on a paid job or just for myself is to have a camera NOT ready for Prime Time.

But dont shoot yourself, stuff happens and we learn from it.

I do remember running out of film on a long news shoot, or on a long pro sports game, back in the film days ;and having a bad card back in the beginning of the digital era. In both cases I thank a few of my fellow pros who were willing to help out a competitor with an extra roll of film or an extra card. Not all competing photographers were willing to help out the competition, but I knew who those folks were, and would never have asked them, LOL.

I try always to pay it forward when I can help out a fellow photographer, amateur or pro.

Cheers and best to you all.

Ten years or so ago in South Africa I headed to a shoot and when I arrived I found that I had no battery in the camera, luckily my friend used the same type of battery and loaned me one. Last August in Kenya we headed to Amboseli NP and when I picked up my Z9 I had no battery cover and no battery in the camera, but luckily I had a spare battery. So I improvised and asked the driver if he had electrical tape and he did. It worked very well, I just had to remember to check that the battery was still in place. My cameras are set to tell me if there is no card.

I was hiking in the mountains and came out of the trees into a meadow about 100 yards long. When I gone about 30 yards into it I noticed two girls/ladies across the meadow waving at me. I waved back and kept walking, while congratulating myself for still being a chick magnet at my age. They began jumping up and down and waving more frantically.

I then realized they were pointing at something so I looked back and realized I had exited the trees right next to a cow moose and calf that were grazing in the meadow behind some trees that I had just passed. While spinning around and turning on the camera at the same time I remembered that the battery was still at home in the charger.

I pretended to take some pix and nonchalantly continued to walk up the trail laughing at myself and grinning like a cheshire cat.

I have not run into the NC problem but I have turned the camera to find that its battery was dead. I do carry 2 extra batteries, so it was only a temporary setback. I also carry two extra cards. Now if I could get some extra fingers that have a modicum of dexterity ...

You would do that only once if you shot weddings.

A friend did it, and I learned from him.

Now every camera bag has a card wallet strapped to it and every camera has a minimum 128GB formatted card installed.

However, I once left the camera batteries sitting in the charger at home, made do with the one in-camera and sent my assistant back to get them.

I once was the Ad Agency Art Director on a film shoot with celebrity talent as the subject ... major production with very tight timing, pro lighting, huge reflectors, etc. They went to load the Mamiya RZ, and no one had brought the film.

Since I am using a Canon 5D Mark IV, I buy CF Cards and SD cards when on sale. I keep a few in my bag because they are getting very cheap. I have extra batteries too. It happened once but never again.

I bet that photographer and/or their assistant caught heck for no film for that RZ. (didn't want to use the more appropriate stronger language that applied in that case, LOL)

Who was on the hook for the costs lost that day ?

When I regularly used my film camera I always had extra rolls of film. Mostly color, many Portra rolls and some BW400CN rolls for some very soft, creamy Sepia portraits. That was my favorite film. So sad that Kodak discontinued it. Nothing else quite matches up!

Leaving the charger behind is my superpower. Have two of the universal ones from the annual trip to Kauai. I suppose 2 in 35 years isn’t bad except when you are rummaging through the luggage and not finding a charger.

The PA rushed back to the studio and retrieved the film.

We were shooting on location at a Detroit Lions star player's home for a State of Michigan campaign. They were inside the home shooting the TV portion of the campaign and the stills came after ... so there was a bit of time to correct the mistake while they prepped the still set and set the lights, etc.

They were literally loading the RZ as the football player came out for the print shoot. Whew!

Back in the day film was an overabundant commodity. Now, not so much. I miss a couple of rolls of Kodak BW400CN.

Now memory cards are so much cheaper and always on sale somewhere. Every time I go into B&H to buy or drool, I always buy SD Cards and CF cards for my 5D IV. I don’t even bother reformatting them

My cameras are never "empty".
