Absolutely correct - manufacturers have been doing it for a long time. In the 60s/70s, IBM incorporated a device on their memory cards that made non IBM memory unusable in IBM products. The competition (EMC) countered by offering a trade in credit for IBM memory. They then removed the device and added it to their memory cards, bypassing IBM’s strategy.

EMC was founded in 1979 and were working on the first disk units based on Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks (RAID) technology. In 1972, I worked on systems that used non-IBM memory. They were Large Capacity Storage arrays, units of 2MB each, that were connected to the memory bus.

Most of the companies vying for pieces of the IBM pie offered cheaper I/O devices. There were Potter and MAI tape drives, compatible printers, displays, card handling equipment, etc., before anybody tackled the disk drives, which were much more complex and therefore more expensive to develop.

The main deterrent to putting any 3rd party memory cards into the system was that it would be altering a device that was usually owned by and leased from IBM. It was one thing to build a self-contained device that would connect to the I/O channels; quite another to cancel support and trigger law suits by altering somebody else's property.

Okay, I'm going to put this out there and if you have strong feeling about "Powerextra", I welcome them.

I'm a Canon user, thru and thru. Right up to 4 Canon 5DIIs and five L-series lenses. Dedication clear.

Only because of this conversation, I took at closer look at the 8 batteries in those 4 5DIIs (each has a battery pack grip). Interesting, for I've found that 4 of those 8 batteries are Canon brand. The other 4 or Powerextra. Then I looked into my drawer where I keep spare batteries. Once again 2 are Canon brand and 2 are Powerextra.

Now I haven't purchased additional replacements, for I've not seen a need, so it has been a couple of years since last purchase. But now I'm wondering about my 4 Canon 5DIIs, knowing manufacturing of those cameras has probably stopped several if not many years ago. I have no plans to switch to R-series cameras, for my mirror camera are providing excellent results. In fact, there are two 4-foot by 6-foot canvas wrap prints on the walls, along with smaller canvas wrap prints. But, knowing the clock-ticks away, and we're getting further and further since the last sale of 5DIIs, I must consider "support items", namely replacement batteries.

So this entire dialogue has suggested to me that perhaps I should consider purchasing additional LP-E6 batteries. And that is the major reason I'm glad I have this organization on hand [although I'd still like to know how the name UGly Hedge HOG came from], and reading the feedback about different brands and the experience you guys and gals have. To which, I say THANK YOU..

It amazes me people pay $4000 for a camera body then complain about paying $50 for a battery.

I went in to get a new EN-EL16C battery for my Z6. They sold me one for $4000.00 but were nice enough to throw in a Free Z8.

Update: Case in point:
Just saw on a "neighborhood" forum that covers dozens of neighborhoods.

Person asked "Is power out?". That's it, three words.

Not mine....
The fact that no one knows where that person lives is superfluous I suppose.

Sounds like NextDoor to me... Most of the time it is a colossal WASTE of time, a rat hole of propaganda, and a pit of aggravated bitching. It is full of:

"What kind of snake is this?"
"Your dog pooped on MY lawn. How would you like it if I pooped on YOUR front porch?"
"Who's selling Girl Scout Cookies?"
"Girl Scout Cookies cause [cancer/flatulence/weight gain/impotence/...]"
"Anyone seen this dog/cat/missing gerbil?"
"Is your power out?"
"When will the power come on?"
"Oh, those evil [politicians of some party or the other]..."
"Did anyone see the UFO last night floating across Wendover?"
"My dog needs an operation. Can you help pay for it?"
"Beware these kids breaking into cars." [see Ring doorbell video]
"This kid in an Audi cut me off on Maple Street doing 90 MPH. Anyone know his daddy?" [dashcam photo shows license plate #]
"Hire me to cut your lawn." [gets tons of responses]
"Who cuts lawns for cheap?" [gets few responses]
"Amurriker needs more prayer." [usually followed by some Bible verse]
"Some kid's on [insert social media app] saying he's going to shoot up the school tomorrow. Should I call police?"
"There's a [house of some ill repute] on my street. When are the cops gonna raid it?"
"They's a shewtin' ray-dar own I-74 tuhday. Y'all slow down, now!"
"Use yer damn turn signal, ash-haulers!"
"Where's the food truck festival?"

I for one cannot see buying third party batteries to save a few bucks to use in a multi-thousand dollar camera.

Not sure why you decided that this issue only happened with British cars imported into the US ? This was true for all British cars EVERYWHERE in the world that used Lucas electrical systems. They gave us Concorde but they also gave us Lucas.

I was proud owner of a 1969 triumph spitfire. I'm glad I was handy mechanical in my younger days

Again, I'm not sure I know what the Spitfire has to do with batteries, BUT, I'm so glad to read that. My very first card, when I began teaching in 1966, was a Triumph Spitfire, which I suppose was a 1966 version. I loved that car. The only one that if you wanted to change the spark plugs, you simply lifted the bonnet, forward since it was hinged in the front, then you could sit on a tire and change the plugs.

I would guess a lot of people on here spent thousands on a camera.

I am curious as to how Nikon can stop aftermarket batteries from being used in their cameras. If a battery manufacturer makes a battery for a specific Nikon camera and it fits and works, what is Nikon going to do, send out an electric signal making the camera reject that battery? I don't think so. Nikon may not like aftermarket batteries being used in their cameras but I am not sure they can do much to stop the practice.

Dennis

Manufacturers might do what printer companies have done: “chip” their batteries, then add software that would prevent operation without the proper chip/battery being recognized.

Bastards!

How can they prevent you from buying aftermarket batteries?
I’m sure H-P Printer Buyers asked the same question re: Ink Cartridges. Maybe required Software Firmware “UPDATES” or Battery Chips? Easy to do. Don’t rule it out.
