I keep the original boxes. Sure came in handy when I was burglarized and had to prove things to the insurance company.

I wouldn't care if I bought a used item and it didn't come with the original box, as long as the unit was packaged safely for shipping. (If it did come in the box, I'd throw the box away anyway....)
I don't need 50+ empty boxes in the garage, attic, or basement.)

As for re-selling - Are people going to say "That's a fine looking box!"?
Or will they say "That's a fine looking lens."....
I get rid of the boxes for everything after all ap... (show quote)

I agee with you wholeheartely about the 'value' a box adds to a used item - but unfortuantely that is not the case with p/x with a shop in UK. For a reason i too can't fathom, camera kit sells or p/xs for a better price if boxed.

Interesting phenomena, eh?
$300 without box, $350 with box.
I guess the box is worth $50.......
I wonder what the seller would say if one asked "I don't want the box, is there a discount?".

Because of the odd sized shipping with the unnecessary box, the shipping cost went up by $50 too ...

I, for one, am willing to pay a premium for a used item with a box. Partly it is for the ease of shipping as already noted. But it seems to be also an indication of 1) fewer previous owners 2) the care taken with the item itself by the seller. I know these are “tools, not jewels,” but if someone is fastidious enough to keep the box, it means that they may be reasonably careful when using the item.

Key operator: may be.

I keep no boxes, but I do treat all my stuff with respect, I do not abuse it.

This is camera equipment, not cabbage batch kids. I trash all packaging as soon as the equipment arrives and the decision to keep is made. I bring a perspective of using cameras rather than collecting them.

I end up keeping them until I clean out my closet, which is usually long enough for any warranty to expire. My main goal is to have a box should I need to send a camera or lens back for warranty service. After that, I don't really care.

I have the box but when I sent my Nikon Df to Nikon for service they told me not to send the box.

Just more stuff for them to keep track of and/or loose......
I suppose they are going on the premise that people will put the lens in the lens box and place that in a plain box for shipping.

I also keep the boxes for expensive equipment. I have also found that it helps with the resale value, and in terms of my large ham radios, it not only helps the resale, it makes shipping easier. Priced a Rolex box recently?

I keep all the original boxes.

It is just a fact that I can get more for the gear upon resale or trade if I have the original packaging. Dealers and buyers will just pay more if the item is in the original box. I know this from decades of selling and trading gear.

Cheers and best to you.

I wish I threw mine away, but I keep them. They are taking up way too much space. Other than for sales purposes, having the original packaging is good for shipping for repair, if you need to.
