I've been to Iceland, took only my 18-200.
Iceland, Scotland, Maine, location doesn't matter to me.
Wherever I go, the 18-200 will go, along with the 50mm.
But that's me. I like to travel light.

Me too. Same places. Great results.

Did everyone read the OP's initial post, before commenting ?

He is taking a mirrorless Sony A6400 APS-C camera. All the suggestions of other cameras and lenses from other brands is not going to help him here.

So please give him E-mount lens suggestions that will fit his chosen camera. He isn't going to go out and buy another brand camera and another mount lens for this trip. The lens needs to be E-mount.

Here is the camera he is taking. And he wants to take ONE lens, only.

https://www.alphashooters.com/cameras/a6600/lenses/#all-in-one (A6400 and A6600 take same E-mount lenses)

The Sony APS-C lenses with the largest focal range: Sony E 18–200mm F3.5–6.3 OSS LE
or Sony E PZ 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS Lens (with power zoom)

Cheers

Two major functions of UHH are to completely redesign vacations and to have all posters buy a completely new camera system, whether they want one or not. I remember seeing it in the contract somewhere.

I'm going on a weeklong trip that will involve several days of serious photography in the near future. It will be very interesting, and I'll have a lot of fun. I'm taking a limited amount of equipment that would be seriously disapproved and deemed completely inadequate by the group here. Might give a report and post an image or two when I get back. Might not.

From my time in Scotland a long time ago, more depth of field was wanted over less. Yes, with 4/3rds the OP would not separate the subject from the background as easily as full frame in some cases, but I found very few times where that was needed. If I felt there was truely a need for such, I would carry a 45mm f1.2 Pro prime (4/3rds) with me. That is still way down my "wish" list.

I think the full frame suggestions 18 to 24 for the wide end and 100 to 200 for the tele end are good suggestions to keep the weight down with f4 or better for exposure.

Always better to have more options...not less.
Especially when traveling somewhere unusual.

Wow, I didn't know photography life could be so complicated.

It’s like everything else: it’s as complicated as you want to make it. Tom Watson said his first golf lesson consisted of an instructor taking him to a green, put a ball on the green, pointed to the hole, handed him a putter and said: “hit that ball into the hole.”
When Tom had accomplished the task the instructor said: “Good! Now you’re playing golf.”

I agree with 'anotherview'. For your Sony A6400, the 18-105 f4 is a great 'all-in-one' lens.

Going to Scotland for 17 days in October. As I see it, there are all sorts of photo ops from inside abandoned castles to city scenes to gorgeous landscapes and everything in between. I only want to take one lens on a Sony a6400. If you’ve been to Scotland, what lens would you recommend? Thank you in advance..

I've been everywhere, done everything and I'd take s 50/55mm. Harry

I've been everywhere, done everything too. I would definitely not take a 50/55mm. First, OP is shooting on a Sony a6400--which is an APS-C camera. So a 50/55mm would behave like a 75/82mm, factoring in the crop factor. That is clearly too long. (If I were to take one full-frame prime for a full-frame body, it would be an 28mm or 35mm lens, but that is clearly debatable.)

But, alas, OP is looking for a one-and-done lens for that trip to Scotland. Yes, having OP's question in mind actually is really useful for giving solid advice. I have recommended the Sony 18-135mm before. Others recommended the Sony 18-105mm or the Sony 18-200mm (there are two versions)--they would work also. Done. What is so hard about this?

Oh, and there I thought it was a bycycle. Or a 3 cyl auto. Crop factor, huh? How 'bout a 35mm then? Or a 24?

I doubt he wants to have the f/8 look for all of his photos...in FF terms.

Its a great look cuz its not a "look" at all. IOW, it makes a rather honest record of whatever it sees ... much like a phone.

Many will claim thaz not creative. No big deal. Creatives dont ask lemmings about lenses to suit destinations. Never.

How toadally boring. And it will be very evident in the resulting pix. Thaz not a prediction. Thaz from observations.

Its the only lens I have for my a6500. Well, almost only. I really loooooove a pancake for pocketability. The 18-105 does everything that needs doing ... except for riding in a jacket pocket.
