I see a downside to the proliferation of sections in UHH. Suppose you want to post a photo and hope for a meaningful discussion that might include critique, content, intent, background, technical issues, processing questions, etc, etc, etc.

Where do you post it? If you go to the Main section, Admin will move it to Gallery. Can Gallery be a place for serious discussion around a picture or is it thought of more as a place to get nice, friendly affirmation?

The problem with other sections, like For Your Considerations, is that you can't reach a large audience.

So, what to do?
I see a downside to the proliferation of sections ... (show quote)

Some of the specialized sections are redundant and tend to overlap while others are indeed specialized and set up to address questions, answers, advice and critiques within their purview.

These sections are easy enough to locate. Are some of the folks on this forum just too lazy to explore their own forum?

Some members do find these sections but don't bother to read about the content and the rules set out by the managers, and therefore can not utilize the full potential of the section.

I manage and co-manage 3 of these sections. There is very little or no traffic there and yet many questions and issues emerge on the main section that would have been better addressed in one of the specialized sections.

I am not interested in reaching a large audience. I prefer to have the time and space to thoroughly address questions, offer more detailed critiques and to direct folks to other resources.

I want folks to try their hand at offering advice and critiques as well and try to discourage "attaboy and attagirl" comments that just take up space. I articulate this policy in the introductory part of the sections, yet most folks disregard these policies. I have received complaints from folks who don't want critiques in a section that is set up for that purpose.

There are many other sections that are excellent resources but folks just don't bother to find and utilize many of them.

I wouldn't say that conversations about equipment are "stupid"*. I do wish there was a section, perhaps called "Tools and Techniques" that is strictly related to gear issues, reviews, and Q&A regarding cameras, lenses, accessories and applied usages.

* "Stupid" is a pejorative word so implying that folks who want to discuss equipment are "stupid" or questions about gear are "stupid questions" is antithetical to your statement about folks should not attack each other.

I do sympathize with your point of view-- I know where you are coming from. I have told numerous folks on this forum, other forums, classes I have given, and trainees in my own photography business that continuously upgrading their gear are NOT necessarily the answers to their various photographic problems- MANY do not listen and just want to throw money at an issue rather than examine their one technique.

On the other hand, new technologies are emerging at a rate more rapidly than ever before. So, it is a good idea to keep abreast of the latest innovations and be in a position to make informed decisions about purchases and future upgrades. Also to consider- some folks are choosing or using the wrong equipment for certain applications so their receiving of timely and accurate advice can be very helpful.

How has UHH impacted your life? Do you spend more of your time reading camera reviews or creating images?

I have seen excellent feedback given in Gallery. I think success is often based on how you word your opening comments; you need to be concise and clear with your request.

You mean NOT "How's this?"?

I have been following the Hoggers for quite some time now and have always enjoyed it! It has been a source for countless suggestions that have helped me many times. Lately, I have no idea where it's going. I check on to review the daily topics and for a lot of them, I have no idea what some are talking about or what they are trying to achieve. IDK but if things don't improve, this Hogger will be moving on. Before I do, I'm curious, has anyone else noticed a decline in subject matter? Maybe it's just me? But I would still like to hear from some of the "ol Timers!"

In my opinion if you have been a long term subscriber and expect to gain information to improve your knowledge the information provided tends to become redundant and irrelavent over time as your knowledge evolves.

Additionally the old timers (with exceptions) tend to be stuck in their heyday and are not current with advances. Also there is an abundance bad information (Dunning Kruger Effect) by well meaning but uninformed photographers. Nobody knows everything and most know less than they think, myself included.

For the neophytes UHH is well worth following...there is a lot of good information despite the bad. For the more advanced photographers it is a good site to show your images providing you can overlook the inevitable inept suggestions on how it should have been composed or processed.

Add finally if none the above appeals there always is the entertainment factor especially if you are bold enough to visit some sites.

That's my critique of UHH and I'm sure there will be a fire storm of derogatory responses but I knew that before I started.

Hang in there and be safe.

I should have also pointed out that the title is very important. Two older examples from Gallery that I posted:

"Your opinion on this 'different perspective' sunrise, please"
https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-421241-1.html
In this one, the opening includes Do you find any interest in this image? I'm getting a feeling of texture (tapestry, other cloth) made by the horizontal bands of light and color behind the slender vertical weeds...

"Breaking the Rules of Composition"
https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-433416-1.html
In this one, the opening includes Your feedback requested on composition and pp. Please be sure to give the "why"

One thing that drives me crazy are the inappropriate ads. I know one has to make a buck to keep something going, but the content of the ads is often not G rated.

Another is that I wish I could mute a couple people that are always angry and combative. Next door neighbor has that feature. The only option now is to unwatch a topic as soon as the first snipe hits, knowing it will turn ugly soon.

I do agree that debates over the best cameras or lenses is solely subjective and of little real value, but I also think that many inexperienced and new photographers can get valuable information from some of the more experienced hoggers on technical issues. I think. too, that photos can be instructive when they include information on camera lenses and settings.

Unless this has changed in recent months, the Admin uses "Is Canon better than Nikon" in advertising, so we should expect questions like this, especially by those attracted by the advertising who do not know how to get started here,

I received a pop-up ad the other day that said, "The answer is now in..." So they continue to (and have escalated) the expectation and promotion of combativeness in their ads.

Yes, the long term individual has attained the knowledge over time that the new guy has not yet attained.
But he was probably like the new guy when he started.

The old guy could say "I remember when I asked that question.",
OR,
he could get pissed at the redundancy.
His choice.

Choose wisely.

I was a regular contributor here.

Then, there were a number of posts at "Chit Chat" by those who questioned the realness of the Covid-19 pandemic, the value of wearing masks, and claims that the whole thing would magically end on Nov 4 - the day after voting had ended.

I complained about these, because many were truly political in nature, but then I discovered that the Admin was treating this like a day job - in particular "Report Issue" didn't seem to be answered on weekends. In the meantime, I had run out of patience and replied in kind.

Meanwhile, I received ad after ad for Trump, but nothing from the other side. The Admin said this was a result of my making political posts, but they continued when I posted only here on truly photographic subjects.

Eventually, both the offending posts and my replies were moved to the "Attic", but as a result I was banned from further participation in "Chit Chat", and the Admin rejected my complaints as "a waste of his time".

So, this will be my last post here. I am now an active poster at the Pentax Forum, which has 24 hour moderation on all 7 days thanks to volunteer moderators all over the globe.

Goodbye - it has been a good six years.

I'd like to see DPReview die a horrible death for their obvious Amazon bias against micro four thirds.
