I have been following the Hoggers for quite some time now and have always enjoyed it! It has been a source for countless suggestions that have helped me many times. Lately, I have no idea where it's going. I check on to review the daily topics and for a lot of them, I have no idea what some are talking about or what they are trying to achieve. IDK but if things don't improve, this Hogger will be moving on. Before I do, I'm curious, has anyone else noticed a decline in subject matter? Maybe it's just me? But I would still like to hear from some of the "ol Timers!"

It's a social media.

I personally would hope to see the death of "which camera system is better or the best" - stupid. They are tools. Paint brushes for artists never 'self paint' any artwork.

And, I'd enjoy seeing the death of Hoggers insulting other Hoggers who have a different viewpoint, regardless of the subject. I was raised to believe that I should be saying something helpful, supportive or encouraging. If you can't say anything positive, say nothing at all.

I agree, it's gotten more mundane

A "broadening" maybe, but I've seen some pretty "in-depth" discussions of many things photography wise (and other subjects as well), and some to great lengths....and of course some funnies, ramblings, many opinions, and on and on...... Remember there are new folks all the time (of various skill levels) who slowly jump in, and others who have lurked for a time before chiming in.....these things can often be cyclic too, as new models and products appear. As Longshadow says "It's a social media" style platform. Take a break...when you come back, if it doesn't do anything for you well "it's been fun" !!

I look at the subject, then the author. That tells me if I want to look at the post. Somedays it is only 50% interesting. Otherwise, I just feel like it is brain fodder. But, then again, I almost did not sign up when I did over some of the contentious remarks I saw.

I think the problem is that people are not getting out and about with the dangers of Covid 19, so, yes, there has been a noticeable narrowing of subject matter. And it is quite understandable from the view point of a senior citizen with health issues that could be fatal if exposed to Covid 19. When a viable vaccine becomes available I'm sure you will see an increase in the variety of photo subject matter submitted to this really great forum. Patience, Grasshopper.

I do agree that debates over the best cameras or lenses is solely subjective and of little real value, but I also think that many inexperienced and new photographers can get valuable information from some of the more experienced hoggers on technical issues. I think. too, that photos can be instructive when they include information on camera lenses and settings.

Some issues are literally done to death, but I guess one has to expect this to some degree. Frankly, I do think that the number of threads that interest me are decreasing, but there's still some that do and the depth some go with their replies for technical issues/questions is truly astonishing. I have learned a lot on this website, including how to filter through and find the threads worth reading and bypass the others. I think I'll stick around awhile longer and would hope that you do to. Good luck and good shooting to all.

I see two things from the previous comments I think might be true. The first is about the fact that there are only so many topics to be discussed, and with the amount of participants and participation on the site, most have been talked through. The second is Covid. I agree that although I myself have made an attempt, I know that I and I'm sure others have simply erred on the side of caution and not ventured out on shoots as they used to. Just like 2Dragons said. I think it will pick up whenever we are able to get a handle on the virus and we all are able to safely get out more.

It has changed, a bit. But... I still find it useful for technical issues. I don’t post unless I have something pertinent to add or learn. I read with care. I choose which posts to read. I stay away from things that are not applicable or pertinent to photographic subjects or snarky condescending comments from nasty people. It’s like all social media, pick what is of interest as you cannot read it all.
Hate to see you go, should you decide to.

Things change over time, it is inevitable.

Exactly! That aggravates the hell out of me too! I've been only sending private messages lately so I don't hear from the high an mighty chiming in with their "vast" condescending knowledge!

I am so bored with this sitting around the house that I floated a "travel balloon" to my wife last night.

So I said, "Honey, would you mind if I outfitted the car for some car camping, and I went to Florida for a month in spring?"

And she replied. Well, the last time you camped 5 years ago you hated it. You don't like to walk, so how do you thing you are going to like this. And how much are you going to spend on a tent, gear, etc that you may use once, and that we don't have room to store it in the garage. At 81 you are not getting younger, so how are you going to do all that.

Well, another good idea shot to hell.
