In your own words why do you take photographs?

I have always had a fascination with 'pictures' love to look at them. Now I want to create them myself. I want to create 'art' that people want to put on their walls. I want to capture the true beauty of nature that they eye sees, but our minds miss.
Dragonfist. I like you have a treasured photograph of my mother, in total surprise, with a cigarette in her mouth, not the most flattering of photo's but we weren't to know it was the last one we would ever have of her, as she died suddenly the next day. Now thats what a camera is for. Preservation of memories.

It is more for a bunch of feelings than any objective(no pun intended) reasons. Hunting is forbidden in my country since a decade, so shooting wildlife for me is now bloodless(a partrige in flight is much harder to catch with a camera than with my old faithful Valmet shotgun). I should confess that these days I find somewhat more pleasing to look at the shot(pun intended) critters than to eat them.
To achieve a small and elusive victory over time - to fix situations for a while - is also pleasant. To look at places that, as Heraclitus pointed out - "Panta rei os potamós" - may look like but are no more. For sheer fun. For 'joie de vivre'.

I used to be an avid hunter, Although I can still hunt if I want to photography is more socially acceptable and I can do it even in heavily populated places.
I find that the skills and knowledge I accumulated when hunting are very applicable in nature photography.

Photography encourages me to look differently at the world around me and share that new view with others.
It gets me out of the house and can be done solo or shared with friends. In that way it is much like going fishing Only I never get skunked ;-)

1)Because I see things differently and I like to capture that to share with others.
2) Because it is as important to me as the air that I breath and the prayers that I speak.

Surely so! I always reputed the stalking as the best part of big game hunting. Stalking for a wildlife photo has the same taste, if not better.
And we can 'shoot' the game as many times as our skill let us, a bonus, no doubt!

To create, to capture the beauty of the world, to promote the beauty of my forgotten corner of the world, to see what happens when I click the shutter, to capture memories, to give myself vision, to see the big picture, to see the little picture, to meditate, to get exercise and stay active and .... because I want to.

 A great response that echos my sentiments as well. Thanks!

To reduce stress. Photography is relaxing because I only shot for me, if others like the images, that is great but not necessary to why take pictures. I prefer to shoot outdoors to get images of God's creation whether that be wildlife or landscapes or maco's

Black Cat I had a very similar experience. My mothers father lived with my mom and dad from a time before I was born. I absolutely adored him and when I was 16 I was going to some occasion where I wanted to use the families trusty old box camera. Wanting to test the batteries in the flash I snapped a picture of gramps in his usual bib overalls he did his gardening in. Little did I suspect he would be gone 4 days later. My beloved grandfather was gone but I treasure that picture more than any photo I ever took or ever will take. That was 55 years ago and to this day there is not a day goes by that I don't think of him.
