My niece'n law shoots a D700 & does some portrait shoots & has in the past done some product work. A great camera with some of the best color output still to this day. If you can find one with a decent shutter count, go for it. I can't speak for the canon model you mention.

Well, I took a shot and ended up putting in an offer for a refurbished Sony A7II for $600, and won! Don't think I could have done any better than that.

I do not recommend the Nikon D 600. I had two of them, back to back, each with a shutter that put oil on the sensor. I do recommend the Nikon D 700. It is one of the best Nikon cameras I have ever owned. I traded it for a Nikon D810. That camera is another good choice, but may be too expensive for your budget.

I have an oldie full-frame Canon AE-1 but don't use it very much. Actually I don't use it at all.

I just bought a Sony A7II. Newly refurbished. Got it for $600!

I have a Nikon F and a log of Canon SLR bodies and rangefinder bodies, which is what I learned to shoot on, with a Nikkor 50/1.4 lens, Leica screw mount. I think this poster was thinking about digital options.

Perhaps ... but awesome photos were taken by a 6MP NIKON D50.

Seriously?

You are aware that great photos were taken with a NIKON F ... and even before.

True, but the F has waaaaaaay over 12MP, not ignoring it has much better DR and no extra charge for the monochrome, astro, and IR models. To be fair, the low speed burst model was severely overpriced ;-)

Paraphrasing Paul, you’ll hafta pay me to take your F offa your hands. Best bargain is you just keep it.

I'm pondering a purchase of an older full frame that would still be considered to produce excellent prints. For Budget reasons. I want to put money into glass. I was considering the Canon 5d Mark II. The Nikon D600, D700 etc. Looking for suggestions. Was looking to spend around $500ish give or take. Looking forward to hearing from you guys!

Many opinions here. Always are when someone is looking to buy a camera. For what it is worth, I have the Nikon D700 (12MP). It is still a very good DSLR, images are very good but not as detailed as Nikons at higher MPs. [https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-497005-1.html]
A while back I bought a "low mileage" D610 off the net. Newer processor and 24MPs in a somewhat smaller, lighter package. Images and handling are excellent. [https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-618083-1.html]
And, of course, some hogs have gotten great deals on pre-owned D800-series cameras. 36MPs. [https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-645491-1.html].

Remember, it's your money and your hobby. Choose a path to travel and have fun.

Having used and owned both the Mark II and III, my recommendation would be the mark III simply because of the focus point selection possibilities of the Mark III. Both are great cameras. Just my two cents. Good luck

I loved my 5D Mk II!
Never any problems after years of faithful and intense service!
Look for a good used one at Adorama or B&H.

The Nikon bodies with the oil on sensor may have been Nikon D 610 bodies.

I might avoid the D600 unless you know the known sensor oiling issue has been repaired by the factory. Another thing to consider: as Paul (CHgCanon) mentioned, the 5D MKIIIs have dropped in price substantially and are a great camera if you can swing the extra $. I sold mine (to buy the Mk IV) with 258,000 actuations, and it was still in perfect condition. Both the 5D2 and 5D3 are built like the proverbial tank. By the same token, in the same price range, the Nikon D750 was a great pro level camera like the 5D3 - I’ve seen them recently in the $750-800 range also. I think you’d be well pleased with the 5D2 or 3 or the D700 or 750.

Keep in mind that the Nikon D700 has a 12 MP camera. However, it performs well in low light.

We should talk loudspeakers some time, I used to have a small company designing and producing high end speakers and vacuum tube amps - just took the website down this year. I’d love to hear about/see what you are building. I built large transmission line designs, executed in exotic woods using SEAS drivers.

Way over my head at this time... I am a newbie who just completed a Denovo flatpack with a full frequency Tang Band driver... Had planned to put a pair of Dayton Audio Point source drivers I had purchased but Cab was too small... working on a simple Open baffle for the Dayton audios now. Good to hear you are an audio guy too.... I seem to recall you talking about that a while back. taking a couple online courses on acoustic theory and basic electronics so I can at least understand crossovers etc... a little bit. If I have any real prob. I will PM you. thanks for responding ! Bob

So you like the 5D Mark II?

Paul gave me some good advice several years ago concerning budget full frame cameras and recommended trying a 5D MK ii. I did just that and started with a 50mm F1.8 canon lens that came with the camera. I paid $500 for the rig and it had 150,000 clicks on it. Later I acquired better glass through used purchases. I shot with this for 2 years and determined I wanted a better focusing with more points and higher frames per second for birds Wildlife and action sports. So I sold the 5DMk ii for what I paid for it and got a 6D MK ii. MPB has a 5D MK ii with 11,005 clicks for $664 which is in nearly new condition. I highly recommend MPB. Also buying here on the HOG can be good too as I recently purchased here a 7D MK ii

I still use my D700 even though I also have a D750 and a P900. Of all the ones I use I still like my D700 just as much and it has features not available on the others. Remote view and gps as add ons'. Available when needed but not taking up camera resources when not.

You cannot go wrong with a low mileage D700. For best results, go to one of the well-known reputable dealers and check their used department. A couple of them sell on eBay.
