just amazing

Thank you Michael for dropping in on my long-going tour of the Arabian peninsula and your kind comment. Did you manage to see the earlier episodes, mainly over in Oman. If not and this is your first visit, I invite you to have a look at the earlier postings (you will need plenty of time as there are some 50 postings). Easy to do, just click on my name (weberwest) behind my avatar, then click on the figure behind "# of topics posted", and the entire listing is there. Thanks again for visiting!

My pics from the Mosque aren’t in the same league as yours Joe, so I’ll be saving these
as a better reminder of a great time in my life!! I don’t care if the State dep’t has a notation
“Arabist” next to my Passport renewal File, I’ll never forget the jarring beauty I found everywhere
in the Gulf. Yes, there are dark places too, but these type places (the Mosque) outweigh the bad
parts. Thanks for your great series, and I have gone into the extended sources you referred me too
as well————Enjoy whatever time you have left there!!

Joe - I’ve been following your travelogue and amazing pictures with great interest, having travelled frequently to many of the cities from the late 1970s thru early 2000s. The size and scale of “post oil boom” opulence is almost unbelievable and regrettably, some of the old neighborhoods have been demolished. Thank you!

Thank you very much Johnnie for following my travelogue and taking the time to write a comment - this means very much to me, especially if it comes from an old hand from these lands! I myself have spent a lot of time out in Asia as well, but most of it in the Far East and in South East Asia, where I lived for 8 years and frequently went and still do go back. I am totally with you as to the almost unimaginable changes that come to that region, and to all that has been lost in this process. I could see that particularly well in Dubai, which I will start to cover tomorrow for some 10 days. I loved the old Dubai in the early '80s and find that the new glitzy part is practically "dehumanized" with nary a soul in the streets. Luckily in Dubai, there is still "The Creek" with Bur Dubai on one side and Deira on the other and plenty of old Arab-town action in both parts and on the water - enjoy these upcoming posts, they will bring back the old memories to you! - Thanks again for taking the time to write your comment!

Here we come into the photographers "candy store":

Besides the very large numbers of mosaic stone inlays and some wooden decorative pieces, there are good number of glass windows and doors treated in a very artistic way. While the wooden elements and certainly the ceramics are quite common decorative elements within mosques in many lands, the treatment of glass in this particular mosque, as shown in this set, is something rather unusual and I personally was very much attracted by it. This is our final look at this mosque and the last set of pictures from inside the mosque concentrates on these glass-etchings and -mosaics.

I suggest using the double-downloads on some of these pictures, effective particularly on #s 8 & 10.

I look forward to your comments and questions and recommend viewing the downloads.

Thank you George, I like that one too for its intense structures - did you do a double download to see the endless details in the glass?
