Basics : Similar to any electronics, SD cards don't respond well to being wet, extreme temperature changes or dirt. Keep them away from spilled coffee or tea, and don't store your DSLR in the trunk of your hot car and then bring it into an air-conditioned room. The contact points of the memory card are especially sensitive.

I backup my photos to an iPad via a SD card reader dongle. Assuming a wireless connection, they are then automatically downloaded to iCloud and my computer at home.

Does your method also back up RAW files? I tried that method some time ago and it only would transfer jpegs.

I agree on multiple cards.

All these maneuvers just to avoid the laptop. What does it weigh. 40 lbs? Even the biggest will fit into a checked bag without taking up much space. And you're out nothing extra (in $s).

I travel with an Android tablet with a 512GB internal card, and outboard (via USB) SD card reader for the cards out of my camera. Use Lightroom CC for Android.

I am going hopefully going on a two trip to Spain and Portugal. I do very little with my images while I am away and thinking of traveling without a laptop and external hard drive to save the images too. My questin is what options are out there. So far I have looked at the following options:
1. Buy multiple cards and number them by day and camera, I normally travel with my 6D and 7D MkII.
2. Purchase a Dazuinfo XferMax X8-C, then add a Hard Drive, and rechargeble batteries and I am out over $600.00
3. Purchase a LaCie DJI Copilot Boss, about $250 and not as nice as #2.

What do you guys do? Are there other options, I am early into this investigation.

Thanks, Gary

Do you shoot raw or jpg? This could affect your choice with raw files usually being 3 or 4 times larger than jpg.

Two years ago, I was in the same quandary, preparing for a 30-day car trip around Europe. I ended up buying an old and well used 10" Acer laptop with cracked screen on the Craigslist for $70. It was functional and totally met my needs. At the end of each day, when resting in hotel, I copied the files from the card, using the card reader, to the small portable hard drive. I had enough cards to have no need to erase images. I set up my camera to save RAW images to one card and JPEGs to the second card. At the end, I had duplicate images on many cards and on the hard drive.

Extra memory cards is the way I would suggest. 16GB cards are cheap and should suffice nicely for daily shots.

My old Lenovo T430 fits in one side of my Samsonite hardshell carry-on. Bridge Panasonic FZ1000, TG-6, Nikon P7800, 2 2.5" HDD, plus headphones in the other side. Simple to ROLL it to the hotel room. I don't PP while traveling, too tired, but minor inconvenience to have a laptop with me.

Bought the T430 as refurbished, added memory, put in SSD, and a cradle for a 2nd internal HDD. All in all, slightly more expensive than the proposed no-laptop solutions, and I have a laptop with me.

1. Definitely take plenty of SD (or whatever) cards. 2 & 3. Yes, there are many other options. See the recent thread: Backing up SD Cards to SSD Sans Lap Top: https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-616895-2.html#11009791. It includes a detailed comparison spreadsheet, but I didn't know about the Dazuinfo XferMax X8-C.

On our expedition to Antarctica, i took my NEXTO DI NPS-10-XQD with 2TB internal SSD and a couple of other alternatives. But NO LAPTOP. With 2 Nikon DSLRs, my son and I took over 10K pictures, which BTW I am still working on while learning LR Classic. Every evening, i used the NEXTO DI NPS-10-XQD to incrementally backup cards from both cameras, which can be initiated in a single operation, then headed for the open bar on the Nat Geo Explorer. It was fast and easily completed before we went to bed. I was too tired to attack photo editing anyhow.

It worked perfectly, except that one day it would not accept one of the SD cards. But I was able to work around that as explained in "Backing up SD Cards to SSD Sans Lap Top". Several others on UHH have also recommended the NEXTO DI NPS-10-XQD, which includes a battery and room for a 2.5" internal drive. Posts below probably mention that, but I have to admit that i didn't study them.

I take one card for each day. Seldom take more than one camera anymore. I label the cards for the day and make sure I change the card out for the next day. When I get home, they get downloaded to computer. I do have a portable hard drive backup for the cards, but I found that it was just another thing to carry around. Since all my media cards are in dry, airtight cases, I'm as safe as possible. I buy new cards often enough that I haven't had a meltdown, yet. If I do carry two cameras, which is rare, I have an entire pack of media cards labelled 1b, 2b etc. Then I know without looking at the EXIF, which media card came out of which camera.

If you have an iphone running ios 13.x there is now the files app.
In addition to your iphone and charger you would need apples camera connection kit, a powered usb3 hub, a usb sd card reader (might be built into the hub) a hard drive (an SSD may be more robust and use less power) a lead for powering the hub (usually micro usb).

Once these are connected together just use the files app to transfer from the card to the drive.
There are a number of variations on this if you have your camera's usb lead you can transfer from the camera without an sd card reader.
If you have a bare Sata SSD drive you can get a cable to convert to USB mine has a 12 volt jack which can take the usual 12 volt wall wart

But I have a battery plate for my Blackmagic Pocket cinema camera which uses a Sony Battery 7.8volt which outputs 12 volt which lets me run a bare 3.5" HDD as a portable drive. You can just use it as battery power for a 3.5" external cased drive. Funny enough the charger i use for the Sony batteries is 5 volt usb.

I take extra cards and a Gnarbox. I copy the cards to the Gnarbox. I can use my phone or iPad via dedicated apps to store and edit my images. I keep the cards and the Gnarbox in different locations. You can even put a copy in the cloud—like Dropbox. I don’t do this. This system worked well for me on a recent two week trip to Mexico.
