I agree with you on this , when my my large commercial printer was installed I was told by Canon techs they wanted me to use a high grade cat 6 cable and route through the router to the printer from the CPU instead of USB cables especially if the printer cable was 25 feet and was amplified as in my case as transmission errors like color variations especially if running near power cables ..

That's because runs of USB longer than the spec affect the timing and can cause data corruption, but it's not the same thing. There are no checksums and parity protection in peripheral interfaces like USB such as there are with TCP/IP over wide area networks. Apples and Oranges...

There are potential data errors in all areas of computing including DRAM, storage and even CPUs (cosmic rays can flip a bit) - that's what data integrity schemes such as checksums and parity are designed to protect against. The average user never sees the 1 in 10<-25 bit errors because except in cases such as peripheral interfaces, they are caught and corrected.

For me it is just another location to store photos. You never mention any where that you are storing your images in different locations. A good back up strategy is to also use different locations. That way if there is damage at one location you haven’t lost everything. External hard drives can also be lost stolen or misplaced. I have one hard drive dedicated to only photos. Another backs that one up. My second back up is to the cloud on Backblaze for $50 a year. Backblaze is encrypted and they continuously back up their drives. So it is pretty secure. The other reason I use the cloud is it gives me access to my files anywhere in the world that I can get an internet connection. Too each their own certainly but it wasn’t all that long ago the only storage for photos and negatives was filing cabinets. People said “I would never store photos on a computer” “what if your hard drive crashes or someone puts a magnet on your computer?” Well technology has advanced. Now everyone stores their images on computer hard drives. Cloud storage is just the next step in technology.

The Apple or mac is running on a 1 terabyte Samsung SSD in bay 1 , files are being written to a 1 terabyte drive in the 3rd bay and backed up on a 3 terabyte external backup plus , in the second bay a SSD is running time machine . The 3 terabyte backup plus is also being shared by the PC when in use , when the PC it is running it is using a 1 terabyte samsung SSD . I will also be installing another SSD in the PC for back up of files . Each of my customers carry 2 terabyte portable drives and all new work of theirs is saved on their drives as they are created . There have been other sites like Atmos online is shutting down , Iron mountain is shutting down in 2 years ,Vaultscape is also closed ,And Cirtas has announced it is leaving the market . I believe Shutterbug also had cloud storage and had to shut it down ....all because of Amazon and other large companies market grab and a few others . As Local Mom and Pop camera stores have closed down I have been buying a lot of photo gear at Amazon and also have a Prime membership . I still buy my Cameras and lenses from Nikonusa . Just lately a close friend told me about a Mom and Pop Camera store about 50 miles south from me in Crystal river , Florida Pasco Camera exchange , I just bought a Nikon 200-500mm F5.6 E VR , and 2 weeks later another friend bought the same lens down there . I just like trying something before buying it... Sorry I got off track..

I use OneDrive and have never had a problem with my images. You can get a free Terabyte of storage for each of up to six family users by subscribing to Office 365 ($99/yr). Mine and my wife's computers are linked to OneDrive and our phones have OneDrive Online. But I don't count on the cloud for long term storage. We back up our OneDrives regularly from the computer to multiple external drives.
Fair warning about OneDrive. Once you learn it, it's wonderful. But Microsoft's support for personal OneDrive isn't good. So if you go with it, always back your stuff up. And know that if you inadvertantly trash something, you have 30 days to recover it.

I have also used amazon photos for file sharing and have noticed the shared images are not as sharp when viewing them from the link provided by amazon but if you download the images then they are as sharp when viewed on my laptop. It's similar to downloading images from this site (UHH) ... images are sharper after downloading them.

My experience is the same as DavidM describes.

All the information for the RAW or jpeg is stored by Amazon and is not lost when downloaded.

Yes, how has the change isolated itself only to sharpness? A filter somewhere in the communication could introduce this effect.

Has the size or resolution of the photos changed? I can't see any way that just uploading files would corrupt them in such a way that they would just become less sharp.

You've got a slow internet connection and you're not waiting for load. But what do I know.

You’re not off track at all. Amazon is busy gobbling up the world. And you’re also correct in that mom and pop cloud companies are going the way of mom and pop camera stores (sadly). There are probably 100-200 cloud providers in the US, but only 4 or 5 I’d recommend - Amazon (who owns as much of the cloud storage market as the next 4-5 providers combined), Microsoft, Google, Apple and IBM.

On the subject of mom and pop photo stores, we are really lucky in Raleigh to have two such stores that are alive and well. Southeastern Camera has a huge selection of both new and used equipment and is staffed by working pros. They pay fair prices for used and charge fair prices as well. How’s that for an off-topic plug for a local store?

Cheers
